With U.S. leadership, the world has seen a nearly 50% decline in preventable child deaths since 1990. This is an incredible success story. We know what works and how to end the needless deaths of moms and babies.
The Reach Every Mother and Child Act would take what works and scale it up to reach more children and their moms. In fact, if enacted, this bill would enable the U.S. to help save the lives of 15 million children and 600,000 women by 2020.

I’m writing to urge you to cosponsor the bipartisan Reach Every Mother and Child Act (S. 1911) introduced by Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Chris Coons (D-DE).
Thanks - in part - to U.S. government leadership and investments, the world has achieved a nearly 50% reduction since 1990 in the number of children around the world who die before they reach their 5th birthday – one of the greatest, untold success stories of the past 25 years. We have the tools and know-how that would enable us to help bring an end to all preventable deaths.
Still, every year 6.3 million children under the age of 5 – primarily newborns – die from preventable causes. In addition, nearly 300,000 women die every year from complications during pregnancy and childbirth.
While we’ve made remarkable progress in much of the developing world, there is much more to do. That’s why I support the Reach Every Mother and Child Act and I am urging you to cosponsor it.
This bill would help improve the lives of newborns, children and their mothers by supporting the U.S. government in scaling up the most cost-effective, proven interventions. This act will create a strategy, set ambitious targets, improve coordination, focus on the poorest and most vulnerable, build shared accountability, and, improve sustainability, and introduce new funding mechanisms to bring new partners, investors, and efficiencies for financing much-needed lifesaving interventions.
Investing in maternal, newborn and child health reduces poverty, stimulates economic growth, and most importantly, saves lives. In fact, if the bill were enacted, we could save the lives of 15 million children and 600,000 mothers by 2020.
