Justice for Robert Dziekanski

Target: The Honourable John van Dongen, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General of British Columbia
Sponsored by: Care2

Robert Dziekanski arrived at the Vancouver International Airport from Poland to reunite with his mother on October 13, 2007, and ten hours after his arrival, was shocked by a Taser by the Royal Canadian Mountain Police (RCMP) and died. Even more shocking, it is now one year later, and the government has yet to conduct a full investigation of Dziekanski's death.

Many issues surrounding Dziekanski remain unsettled, such as whether the RCMP used excessive force or not. It is imperative that a thorough investigation be conducted in order to properly assemble the facts, execute justice and prevent this event from repeating itself.

Citizens and international visitors alike need to trust that they will be treated fairly and humanely by the RCMP and the Canadian government. Even more importantly, Dziekanski's family deserves to have closure and know the exact details about his death. Let us not forget this tragedy--tell the Minister of Public Safety of British Columbia that we need justice without delay!

Dear Honourable van Dongen:

Robert Dziekanski arrived at the Vancouver International Airport from Poland to reunite with his mother on October 13, 2007, and ten hours after his arrival, was shocked by a Taser by the Royal Canadian Mountain Police (RCMP) and died.

Even more shocking, it is now one year later, and the government has yet to conduct a full investigation of Dziekanski's death.

This past February, retired B.C. Appeal Court justice Thomas Braidwood was appointed to lead the two-stage commission of inquiry into Dziekanski's death. While the first stage has been completed, which examined the energy weapons used by police other than the RCMP, the second and most crucial stage, which examines how and why Dziekanski died, has been postponed twice.
We signed the “Justice for Robert Dziekanski” petition!

Is this your way of telling us that the police cannot be held responsible for their own criminal actions?

I FEEL THAT FOUR RCMP OFFICERS WENT TO THE AIRPORT BECAUSE OF THE CALL THAT CAME IN OF A VERY DANGEROUS MAN THAT NEEDED TO BE STOPPED.THEY USEDTHE TASERS,BUT NOT TO CAUSE HIS DEATH AND NOW IT'S KNOWN THAT TASERS CAN KILL.

As far as I can see and hear from the video, the police did use too much force. Four snaps from the tazer is too much voltage going through the man's body. The body was jerking because of spasms. Why didn't one of the cops sit on the guy's hips/legs!? That would have controlled the squirming a little better.

I'm so terribly ashamed to be a Canadian at this moment! These particular RCMP were nothing but bullies, picking on someone that obviously couldn't understand english, and was defenceless. Why wasn't a translater brought in to fix the whole situation, and the man would be alive today!

This entire situation indicates the complete lack of accountability of the rcmp, the ministry of the attorney general, and justice minister of our country. The fact that the rcmp conducted an investigation into the subjects past in Poland on our nickel, which is totally illegal, and to try and hide the video tape, (thank God for the video) shows me that the competence displayed by the aforementioned is inept and that is being generous. each member of the rcmp involved in this should be charged with manslaughter the "mountie" that placed his knee on Mr. Dziekanski's neck is a low life coward, the other impaired mountie that killed a biker is still receiving pay should dismissed and face criminal and civil charges (talk about the queens finest) It has now been two years plus since this happened and still no justice. when the hell are you going to do something wally opal?????

Its only obvious that the poor man could not understand english, hence...didn't obey orders. Why discuss it anymore.....everyone involved...employees of YVR, general public, RCMP, anyone who saw this man should be ashamed to call themselves human being. There was nothing but savage behaviour and neglect for this poor man. Think of a scared caged animal. You people disgust me.

When I heard that the 4 officers were not going to be charged I was more than outraged. The law seems to be able to get away with whatever they want. No consequences seems to be the norm. Its getting way out of hand. With the use of these tasers also seems to be getting out of hand anytime there is an incident they whip out the taser its becomming the WEAPON of choice, its dangerous and no thought for the victom its being used on.

The actions by the 4 police officers is not justified. How is this "Using as much force as nessesary"? They carry batons that would have been more in tune to the situation. Then to blatently lie about everything to cover their butts? The police officers are fully trained law enforcement and i really have a hard time comprehending 4 men of their size in taking the stance that "He had a weapon" A Stapeler?????? Why couldnt one of the officers take out his baton and given a whack on the arm so the stapeler was dropped? Shameful behaviour.

The four RCMP officers should be charged with either Manslaughter or Negligent Homicide. The high-ranking RCMP officials who obstructed the hearing should be discharged immediately.

The tasering of Robert Dziekanski is a blatant murder of a man who just arrived in this so called most wonderful place on earth to live. It is disgusting that these 4 police officers did what they did at the airport that day. They deserve to be put behind bars, and the key thrown away. Its on video, its in an email, it has been witnessed that they over reacted. I mean come on a stapler, thats laughable. I am ashamed to live in this country with police acting the way they do Get justice for this man and his mother. Our justice system is a down right disgrace, what a wimpy country we live in. We need to be more like the states, lets have some balls, and put punish these so called police officers, strip them of their badges, they dont deserve to wear them

I am a retired police officer (RCMP and other) with some 30 plus yrs. experience! My most recent job experience involved investigating police in Sask. regarding deaths of first nations men and other complaints involving police. I have a lot of experience in this area and am most appalled at what has taken place in this instance and other incidents recently. If i can be of any assistance I am more than willing to do my part! I have had letters to the Province newspaper printed on 26 APR 09, 30 MAY 09, 12 JUN 09 and 13 AUG 09, along with others that have not been printed!I headed up a Special Investigations Unit in Sask. looking into police misconduct and we were successful in having charges laid in various incidents and obtained convictions that not only resulted in jail time but more improtantly dismissal of the officers from their positions. Due to health reasons (brain tumour) I had to leave my position some three and one-half years ago - successful surgery followed and I am still recovering but am getting stronger. I think I have valuable experience in this area and have dealt with police officials, gov't officials, media, so-called "independent police investigative units" at the highest levels and can offer valuable advice if required! I wish you good luck with this!

How can this be shelved???? A man died because of the overzealous acts of some RCMP cowboys whose psychological profiles would probably horrify the average citizen and nothing happens, great that really boosts public confidence!!!! Congratulations for making our society safer by "accidental" execution of this obviously ferocious criminal. Bloody Hell you should all be ashamed of yourselves, what a pathetic excuse for public servants.

Why is this investigation beings stalled yet again? Mr. Dziekanski's family deserves better! We claim to be a democracy in which human rights are valued. These values require transparency and due process in order to function. The government needs to genuine demonstrate its commitment to these rights, not just lip service!

Charges must be filed against these officers, and against both the senior RCMP officers and crown attournys who have obstucted justice, lied under oath, and brought the Justice system into disrepute. Furthemore the use of CEW must be banned - police have universally demonstarted their organizational culture leads to abuse of this weapon, and the propaganda that this is a safe weapon by Taser corp is unsustainable in the face of facts.

This incident is an embarassment to Canada, and especially to British Columbia. Why does the BC Government continue to allow foot-dragging stall the open and comprehensive evaluation and resolution to this terrible tragedy? Please - no more postponements. This should not be a game of political football.

Please conduct a formal investigation in this senseless death of this Polish citizen. This kind of things should not happen here in Canada. The Dziekanski family needs and deserve to know the exact facts surrounding the death of Robert to go on with their lives.

Get on with it. The same old addage applies when quilty [1] Deny Deny, Deny [2] Counter with false accusations, [3] Create a new "spin." Tasers are not welcome in Canada until you get a grip on who is competent to use them. The number of deaths that have occurred are evidence of the incompetence of the users. One death is one too many, and we are taking in notable numbers, not just one. The taser company representations are rather like those of a pharmaceutical company who stand to lose a lot of money after killing people with their medications. As a Canadian and a Canadian born I expect more for the safety of my family than that which was to offerred to Robert Dziezanki and others who have died and deserved the same rights I expect but also do not have. You have a problem and you are making it all of our problem. That is not your job and not what we pay you for, we pay you for safety for ALL, which equals safety for all in the final analysis of apllying the appropriate principles. Right Now that means "NO" tasers until you get it right. Trigger happy by genes and other trigger happy by permission, and others trigger happy by ignorance of what poses a threat and what does not, ie. mentally ill for ONE, and one only. Thank you.
