Matthew Charles was released after 21 years of a 35 year sentence for selling crack to an police informant and other crimes. Having found faith in Jesus in prison, he started studying for his GED and finished it, then went on to help others obtain their GEDs, as well as helping other inmates interpret the legalese of their court documents. He also had *no* disciplinary infractions! During his two year release, he volunteered at a food pantry every Saturday, held down a steady job, reconnected with his family, and found a girlfriend. Now all that is threatened, as the United States Attorneys' Office has sent him back to jail. This type of action has in the past been ruled in violation of the Fifth Amendment, which states: ..."nor should any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb" This is double jeopardy, pure and simple, and a violation of the spirit of the Bill of Rights. We demand Matthew Charles rights be upheld and that President Trump use his executive power to commute Matthew Charles' Sentence, and/or that the Governor Bill Haslam use his power for the same purpose.
