Support a Strong National Renewable Electricity Standard

If we had a strong national standard for renewable electricity, we could reduce global warming pollution, create jobs and save consumers money by requiring utilities to generate an increasing percentage of electricity from clean, renewable energy sources – like solar, wind, geothermal and biomass.

Recently introduced in the House of Representatives, the Renewable Electricity Standard (RES) bill (H.R. 890) will require utilities to generate or buy 25 percent clean, renewable energy by 2025. It is one of the most effective ways we can address both global warming and our nation's economic crisis.

We have an historic window of opportunity to pass this critical legislation, given the recent changes in Washington. But we need Congress to support a strong standard that doesn't squander our chance to renew our economy with clean and renewable energy. Please urge your representative to co-sponsor the "25 percent by 2025" Renewable Electricity Standard bill today!

Subject: Please co-sponsor the renewable electricity standard--H.R. 890

Dear Representative,

Please co-sponsor H.R. 890--recently introduced by Representatives Edward Markey (D-MA) and Todd Platts (R-PA)--creating a national renewable electricity standard (RES).

This bill would create a large and growing market for clean and truly renewable sources of electricity.

Department of Energy and Union of Concerned Scientists analyses of a 25 percent RES find that it will:

* create thousands of new jobs;
* save consumers money on their utility bills;
* reduce global warming-causing carbon emissions; and
* increase the amount of clean, renewable power in the United States by more than 135 percent over current state and federal polices--enough to power the equivalent of 150 million homes.

Please step forward to co-sponsor this vital bill.

Sincerely,
