Stop Gov. Vilsack (Iowa) from Legalizing "Dog Farming"

  • by: Bethany Marsh
  • recipient: Tom Vilsack, Governor, United States Government
Iowa House and Senate have already approved a Bill 2797 with a "hidden provision" allowing dogs to be classified as "farm products". Gov. Vilsack is about to sign this bill into law. If dogs become classified as "livestock," they would be in the same category as pigs, chickens and cows --- and not protected by cruelty and abuse laws. This could allow for eating dog meat, using dog fur on clothing and other ornaments.
Governer, please hear our pleas and DO NOT sign Bill 2797 into law. Animal rights need to be strengthened, not weakened!

This dangerous change in the law is designed to give dog breeders a tax break!
It is not saying that cows, poultry, etc, are less important than dogs; this has to with the fact that other species should not be added to the menu, especially those which have formed strong bonds with humans, namely: dogs, cats, horses, etc.

Particularly note the relevant portions of Bill 2797 at page 43, line 34 thru page 44, line 4 below, which would classify dogs as "farm products" and their breeding as "agricultural production".

43 34 3. "Agricultural production" includes the production of
43 35 flowering, ornamental, or vegetable plants in commercial
44 1 greenhouses or otherwise, and production from aquaculture or
44 2 canines from licensed facilities. "Agricultural products"
44 3 includes flowering, ornamental, or vegetable plants and those
44 4 products of aquaculture or canines from licensed facilities.
