Senate: Vote YES for Credit Card Reform!

Target: U.S. Senate
Sponsored by: Consumers Union

President Obama is throwing his support behind major credit card reform, and the House just overwhelmingly passed its bill by a vote of 357 to 70!

But the Senate is bitterly divided. Your Senators must hear from you right now. Tell them to stand up for constituents, not the big banks!

After taking billions in taxpayer bailouts, the banks turned on their own customers. They hiked interest rates on millions of consumers' credit cards – including those who pay on time. Bank of America just socked good customers with double-digit interest rates for no reason!

The Senate may vote this week on its bill to curb these random rate hikes and fees. But the bank lobby is swarming Washington, claiming if they can't randomly hike your interest rate, consumers will suffer.

You know better. These random interest rate hikes are busting families' budgets and driving more Americans into debt. Tell your Senator the real story! Credit card reform will help our economy, and make banks play by fair and sensible rules.

Subject: Pass S. 414 now, with earliest effective date

Dear [Decision Maker],

As your constituent, I urge you to pass S. 414, the Credit CARD Act, without any weakening amendments and with the earliest possible effective date. Several major banks just hiked interest rates and fees on millions of our credit cards, including good customers who pay on time each month. These abuses tactics must stop -- they are bad for me, and bad for our economy.

[Your personal comments will be added here.]

Responsible credit card consumers shouldn't be subjected to out-of-nowhere interest rate increases and fees. But the card companies are arbitrarily hiking interest rates on our existing balances -- even those who make payments on time -- just because of an "anytime/any reason" clause in the contract. S. 414 would prevent my card company from changing the rules of the game midstream, and give me the deal I signed up for.

WE are one of the 'lucky' ones to receive an interest increase for being good paying customers. We normally pay our bill in full every month, only occasionally carrying a balance and still we have to pay the consequences of the deep pockets of the banks while the the CEO and CFO's continue to collect the exorbitant paychecks. What about the single mom, what about the uneducated dad struggling to feed his family, what about the elderly onfixed incomes? STOP NOW !

I would like for credit cards to stop charging fees to my credit card when I don't have available credit. For instance, I have the Payment Protection Plan in which I pay once a year or twice a year. Capital One charge my card for $7.50 for the Payment Protection Plan when I only had $5 available credit. When that charge was made I was put overlimit of $2.50. Therefore, I was charge $29 for going overlimit for $2.50. This frustrates me the most and it is unfair!!! we need a reform! And we need it NOW!!!

It is usurious and will make any notion of economic recovery impossible. It is leading to an oligarchy like south America has and once it is started you can't stop it.

In the last couple of months I have seen my credit score take more than a beating. Not because I defaulted on a loan or because I neglected to pay my debt but because my credit card companies have deemed it fit to skyrocket all of my interest rates. I pay all of my credit cards on time, keep lower balances, make above the minimum payments required and still my rates have doubled and tripled. Credit cards with well over 10 years of history are now expecting that either I accept the astronomical rates that they are imposing or opt out. I have already opted out of a few of my accounts and the damage is reflected upon my credit score. For someone who has carefully built up their credit and does not abuse the credit cards that they have, this seems very unfair. I know that the economy is struggling but I still manage to pay all of my debt monthly and do not feel that I should be punished by higher rates! It should be common knowledge that the higher rates credit card companies are now demanding from their customers are going to eventually push even the most financially-stable consumers closer to financial ruin. With the credit card reform slated for a 2010 effective date, it is more than apparent that credit card companies are taking full advantage of the American consumer while they can. It is also becoming apparent that the financial future for many Americans is going to be bleak if action is not taken soon to end these unfair practices.

PLEASE reform the credit card industry in favor of consumers! 10 years ago I took a credit card application from a bulletin board in my college classroom and the rest is history! I now have $17,000 I'm struggling to pay off out of an addiction that formed from bad choices...all enabled by that little form. I have been recovered from my addiction for over a year now and haven't used any cards, but now I'm struggling to pay it back. With the exhorbitant interest rates my payments don't make a dent.
