The Truth About Natural Gas

Target:
State Lawmakers
Sponsored by:

Many customers of natural gas are aware of carbon monoxide and explosion but are not aware they can be poisoned by unburned natural gas.  Many gas companies are telling customers that it is safe and non poisonous but that is wrong.  Natural gas is mostly methane which is not considered poisonous, it is an asphyxiant, meaning it takes away oxygen and suffocates the living to death.  Chemicals that are listed as poisonous are added to the methane, making natural gas poisonous.

I don't have enough room on this page to outline the 2 years of illness and coming to near death from breathing in natural gas from leaks in my house. 2 years later, 8 doctors, 1 surgery later I am at 75% health again. The people who lived there before and after me got sick too, but not as bad as I did. People's lives can be ruined because of this stuff. The public needs to KNOW.

I almost died in my apartment with my 2 and 3 year old yesturday. There was a natural gas leak in the vent system of my apartment. I had severe headaches, nausea, vomiting, weakness of my limbs, numbness of my limbs, decreased vision, shortness of breath, sore throat, just to name the major symptoms. I called my sister to come get me because I was an inch from consciousness. I was losing life and didn't know why. I blamed myself for not drinking enough water. Everyone kept saying, "drink water, you are just dehydrated." I moved into my apartment August 7th and almost died August 31st. The smell of the gas was unbearable and the technician that came out told me that I was lucky to be alive. Both of my kids became ill with coughing and runny noses and weakness/tiredness. They are now staying with my mother until their health is back to normal. The leak is fixed and I will not allow them to come back home until the smell is gone. I am still here but I can't afford to leave my home. I just moved here and all my money is tied up in this place. I just pray to God and hope for the best.

I called the gas company about smelling natural gas when I went to put my two year old daughter to bed. He told us to get out of the house. We did and there was a leak in the meter, which he did fix. When we got back home and tried to put her back to bed, was sreamiong and cring non stop. After three hours of this and her throwing up twice. I too her to the Emergency Room at Reid Hospital in Richmond, IN. I told them that she had been exposed to gas fumes and was throwing up. We waited two hours in the waiting room, and she fell asleep before a doctor ever called for her so I took her back home. I put her back to bed and 20 minutes later she started cring and getting sick again. I did not realize that the fumes were still lingering in the air. We had opened the windows and it had been five hours since the leak was fixed. Finally, I got her to fall asleep. I laid on the floor next to her because the entire time during this episode she was having a hard time breathing. I thought it was just her trying to catch her breath from crying so badly. Then I learned what Natural Gas does and realized she really was having a hard time breathing because of breathing in the gas. I will make sure that everyone in my city knows that our hospital (by the way they just built a brand new one because they are so great) is full of the most uncaring, unprofessional, golddiggers I have ever met. I would never recommend tha thospital to anyone. In the time we had to wait. I could have driven to Dayton, OH to Riley in Indianapolis and had immediate medical attention for my daughter.

I am extremely worried..for 8 months my daughter and her baby (now 9 mo old)lived in a mobile home with a gas leak..the first time the smell was noticed and the utlity co advised, they came and could find no leak..the home constantly smelled of gas..so yesterday I called the utility co, they came and found two leaks..unhooked the gas stove, and told they would be back the next day to fix it with the proper parts...what kind of health problems should we be concerned about..my daughter was always tired, but feels better since the smell is gone...what should we be concerned about health wise for the two of them..? and where do we go to have them checked?

I have been extremely, mysteriously ill since moving into my current residence and have eliminated a few possible conditions by frequent doctor's visits and various blood tests. However, yesterday, after calling NIPSCO out to check something I'd suspected years ago, I found out that an old copper-pipe behind the washing machine had a bad gas leak, underneath the floor. Frustrated and relieved at the same time, all I can do now is pray that my children have no long-term effects. We the people of this Earth deserve to know the TRUTH about chemical poisons!!!!!!!!!!!!

This web site saved me. Thank you Roxanne. For a year I have been living in hell. Losing my hair, my memory, my eyesight, my attention span, my tastebuds, etc. My animals have been sick; I have been diagnosed with pneumonia, asthma, bronchitis; I've had nosebleeds, nausea; you name it-I've had it. I've been living in a duplex for exactly one year. In that timeframe I have called the gas company 3 times, I've had 3 different maintenance people here-all were useless. One actually greased a valve in my basement saying that was the problem; the next gas man replaced the same valve; the 3rd said it was my downstairs neighbor's stove, so he got a new one installed. The 1st maintenance man rewired my stove because it was hooked up illegaly! The owner had the electrical wire running thru one of the burners & plugged into an extension chord next to my sink! So what did the maintenance man do? He just cut that wire and ran a new one under my stove! Now I have 2 wires on a gas stove with an electric starter...the 2nd guy said the gas valve under my stove was open, so he shut it! The end! The 3rd one ordered a part so the 4th burner that never worked since I've been here now works...but nobody made the odor go away. This has been surreal. I thought maybe it's me-maybe I'm stupid-I went and purchased a carbonmonoxide detector for almost $60.00 2 nights ago-zippo-not the problem. Tonite I felt like my head was going to blow off, so I actually searched the web for "symptoms of gas poisoning" and I found this site. That was all I needed. I called the realtor; she said call the gas company-terrified I'd be made a fool out of again, I grabbed my nextdoor neighbor and asked her to stay with me & help me explain to the gas man that I needed a methane tester-not their usual tool. This time I got lucky-the guy immediately looked under my stove-got an extremely high reading-shut my gas off, wrote up a tag-told me it's in the wall and it's up to the owner (I rent) to fix. The wall will have to be broken into in order to be repaired. I almost kissed the man! I now have no gas, but I am slowly starting to breathe again. I can tell the difference, because for some reason I have always been able to detect odors that others can't. This might be the 1st night in a year that I'll be able to truly rest. The only sad thing is that tomorrow when I call the realtor, she'll call the damn owner who illegally hooked the stove up from the getgo. I pray to God that he hires someone with knowledge to repair the problem-otherwise, I'll be forced to call L&I who might end up shutting this place down, and I will have nowhere to live.

Due to illness I had to move into my daughters house. Since it is small I live in the room that was made from the back porch by the previous owners The room they put a fireplace in, nothing on this house was done properly. Well I have smelled a gas smell in that room since I moved in and it has recently gotten worse. I have many of the symptoms described in Ms Bedfords article. And have been getting worse lately. I too feel better if I am out of the house for a period of time. Because of my disease I have been putting the change in symptoms down to mental stress. Not anymore. It is going to take me a few months to save up enough to pay a plumber to come out to fix it since we are not in the financial condition to just put out a few hundred for one now. But it is something I can look at now and hopefully get a little better.

I have had many people upon entering my home indicate that they smell gas. I have a Nighthwack monitor which monitors co and gas althouth it does not give a numerical readout for natural gas as it does fo co. I have had the local fire depatment check for co and gas(methane) based upon my units alarm. They found no malfunction and recored it. I feel that if the majority of people entering my home indicate that they smell gas than something is wrong. I know that the insturment i am using is very sesitive, which is the main reason I purchased it. Visitors have told me to remove the batery and unplug the device to avoid nuicense trips, but that is the last thing i am going to do. I need to know if my detection device is to sensitive or what action I should take. Thank you and best regards, Terry Bonkowski 19761 Mac Arthur Redford Twp. Michigan 48240

When I moved in I disconnected the gas appliances and told the gas company to TURN IT OFF. Gary Null says don't cook with gas - its very bad for your health. That is good enough advice for me. I cook with electric and heat my home and water with oil

Our street has been contaminate by the natural gas for at least 2 years, maybe more. I've lived in this house for 4 years. I lived on the street +3 years in another home. The forgetfulness and inertia is unexplainable at times, or so I thought. The gas company keeps saying it is fixed, but no, it is still here smelling like gas smells with all of its additives. They came out yesterday, last night today and still it smells just the same. Please Help me. I am powerless until I know what I can do. I refuse to be a victim of the natural gas company. thank you!

I nearly lost my job because of natural gas. Over a few months I steadily became more affected with flu like symptoms, and extreme tiredness. I couldn't focus my vision very well, and my memory was damaged. Nausea, stomach aches, headaches. One day my neighbor smelled the gas and commented to the apartments maintenance man. Two gas leaks were found! Following repair, within a week I began to get my strength and energy back. Now I want to know the long term affects of this exposure. My concern stems from the fact that since this exposure, I have battled more sickness then ever in my life. It's nice to hear that no one wants to take responsibility to prevent, fix, or educate on this matter. Especially the government or gas companies. I suppose I need to do everyone's job for them?

I asked DTE Energy to turn on the gas for 2 apartment units. The serviceman noticed right away of a gas leak in one unit since the meter was running quite rapidly with the furnace and gas oven turned off. I was asked to listen for the leak in the basement. Sure enough a cap was missing from a gas pipe, meant for a gas dryer. I almost fainted 10 minutes later, and continued to "almost" faint several times in the next few hours even after leaving the house for fresh air. I also continued to feel dizzy for the next few days. The DTE Energy serviceman also noticed a gas leak in the second unit. This time the gas meter was running very slow and would move after 5 min. He could not find the source of the gas leak after a few soap bubble tests. He shut off the gas to the unit, and recommended an air pressure test performed by a professional plumber to find the leak.

I had 3 natural gas leaks in my apartment. I called the gas company and they didn't find them. I am very sick, with migraine, nausea, loss of memory, digestive problems, and an inability to breath like I've never had before. I feel like I cannot breath anymore. Please contact me with information or questions I would love to talk about this. Laforzagopnig@Yahoo.com Thank you

I became deathly ill during and after my 3 1/2 year natural gas leak in my home. Eleven years after I moved into that home, and six years after moving, I still experience health situations that are life threatening. Please read www.helpforyou.iwarp.com Does anyone have lesions that grow from a tiny break in the skin to silver$ size in less than one day. What are your c.b.c. blood results? Any unusual medical results, please let me know, I have a long list of my own so-called unexplained stuff, e-mail me from my web site so WE CAN STOP THIS!

My family was exposed for 3.5 years to a slow leak. The symptoms are numerous: digestive, headaches, enzyme deficiencies...and after 13 doctors- I realized no one knew how to help us. It is a huge coverup. We need to get the word out that Natural Gas is dangerous. Read gas-leak.org for more information.

Natural gas kills, destroys, and hurts I lost my Grandmother who had many years left, she was strong in heart, mind and spirit She made it known shenew there was a problem and the gas company simply would say there was nothing wrong Finally as the qouging continues with the prices they finally decided to go back and fix a leak which theyjust so happen to find after the main complaintant falls ill and repair the leak truth be known the leak was probably never reported to EPA or DHEC or the Fire Dept. I hope to receive the required signitures on this petition and make the wrongs which were done to my family right even thogh we are late in saving my Grandmaother maybe I can help to save someone elses Grandmother so they atleast have the ability to learn as much as I have if not more from theirs. I LOVE YOU GRANDMA:) Johnny

My mom died of a gas cluster coverup very similar to Roxanne's and noone cares to lead up in the direction to prove that the natural gas fumes she complained for years is what actually killed her. My mom was 78 when she passed and let me tell you my mom was a strong 78 before the ailments started with the difficulty in breathin, fainting spells etc...etc. Gil Rivera

Well all in All the Goverment who tends to cover up everything that looks bad against them this must be looked into we do not need anymore death in this area.

I am currently suffering from symptoms brought on from inhalling natural gas from a leak for at least 3 weeks, I suspect longer. I've always been told breathing this gas was harmless. I know very differently now.
