Protect National Parks and Wildlife from Sea Level Rise

Some of America's most beloved wild places — and the animals that make their home there — could soon be submerged by rising sea levels, according to a new report from the National Park Service.

Florida's Everglades, Massachusetts' Cape Cod, California's Golden Gate National Park — even the birthplace of George Washington — are all threatened by sea level rise associated with climate change.

Rising sea levels threaten to destroy key habitat for rare animals like loggerhead sea turtles at North Carolina's Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Florida's adorable Key deer, river otters and fishers in Washington's Olympic National Park, and other wildlife.

But that's not all, the National Park Service estimates that sea level rise also threatens $40 billion dollars in taxpayer-owned assets.

We must do what we can to protect these special places. Please sign and share this petition to urge Congress to fund efforts to offset the impacts of sea level rise on our National Parks and the wildlife that lives there.

Dear Decision Maker,

As someone who cares about our National Parks, I am greatly concerned by the national Park Service's recent report on the effects of rising sea levels on these special places and the wildlife that lives there.

According to the National Park Service, rising sea levels threaten $40 billion in taxpayer owned assets. But the cost is far greater. Key habitat for rare wildlife could be lost to the sea, threatening the survival of entire populations of imperiled sea turtles, Key deer, and other animals.

The threat is real and demands immediate action from Congress. I strongly urge you to support funding for efforts to offset the impacts of rising sea levels on our National Parks and support efforts by all federal agencies to better understand, plan for, and combat climate change.

Sincerely,
