Don't Disenfranchise Eligible Voters

Target: Your State's Governor
Sponsored by: Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee
News recently broke that several states have been engaging in voter roll purges that may be illegal, disenfranchising eligible American voters in a move that is sure to cause confusion on Election Day. Ensuring that every vote is counted is crucial for the future of our democracy, especially given tight races across the country for local and national offices.

Colorado is one example of where political shenanigans are underway to disenfranchise eligible voters. In the three weeks after July 21, an estimated 37,000 people were purged from voter rolls - but only 5,100 people moved out of the state and 2,400 died. So why were the other 29,500 voters removed from the rolls?

Election officials have no answer to this question, but they should. With tight races for president and senator, the nation's attention will be focused on Colorado and several other states. Not just residents of Colorado, but every other state, must take steps to ensure our state's election rolls contain all eligible voters.

Urge your governor to ensure that all of your state's eligible voters are on the voter rolls before November 4!

Dear Governor,

I read with dismay the account of how eligible voters across the country are being purged from state election rolls or prohibited from registering. Voting is a key facet of our democracy, and it's incredibly important that every eligible American has the opportunity to vote on November 4. I urge you to ensure that every eligible voter in our state has the ability to vote.

Election officials are only supposed to verify eligibility with the federal Social Security database when they cannot locate a match in state records, since state records are generally most up to date. And names should only be purged in the case of voters moving out of state or dying.

I urge you to personally check the process of election officials in our state to ensure we are meeting federal guidelines and not disenfranchising any voters.

I understand the desire to purge the election rolls, but the process must make sense, and there must be transparency and there must be accountability. Without these, there really should be no purging at all! Isn't it better to have a couple extra names flowing around that to not allow a person to vote?
