Don't Throw Away Hungry Kids' Lunches

Hungry children will be denied school lunch, then have food thrown away right in front of them. The "no money, no lunch" policy is supposed to teach parents a payment lesson. Instead, it inappropriately punishes students.

A New Jersey school districts claims that parents don’t file the right paperwork for lunch subsidies. Starving kids in the middle of the school day hardly seems like a solution. Educational policy should never intentionally cause childhood hunger.

Keeping kids hungry is never the answer. Food supplies in America are large and prospering compared to the rest of the world. We know how detrimental hunger is to a child's education, health and future. Throwing food away in front of hungry students is a cruel and extreme tactic to combat a simple paperwork issue.

Tell Superintendent Ronald G. Taylor that keeping kids hungry is a disturbing and unnecessary policy that has no place in New Jersey's schools.
Dear Superintendent Dr. Ronald G. Taylor,

Children should not be systematically punished because their parents failed to fill out a form. The new "no money, no lunch" policy enacted by the Willingboro, New Jersey school district says "yes" to the cruel and avoidable: starving children to solve a basic paperwork issue.

This policy condones throwing available food out right in front of students, who will not have an opportunity to eat before they're sent back to the classroom. Childhood hunger is running rampant in America, with one and four children going hungry every day. Hungry kids endure plummeting classroom performances. Their health suffers, meaning more sick days and time away from school. Overall, hungry children are less likely to graduate from high school and go on to college. Perpetuating this tragic trend is not the answer to a bureaucratic school lunch issue.

I urge you to abandon the extremist "no money, no lunch" program that intends to punish hungry children by denying them school lunch and throwing available food away in front of them.
