Tell Christy Clark that BC Needs a Real Climate Plan

  • by: Broadbent Institute
  • recipient: BC Premier Christy Clark and Environment Minister Mary Polak

The BC Liberal government finally released its long-delayed climate plan for British Columbia, and it ignores the advice of its own team of experts.

Christy Clark's own government brought together the Climate Leadership Team, a panel of experts from academia, business, NGOs, First Nations and more to develop recommendations for a real plan for climate action.

Under the BC Liberal's plan, not a single one of the 32 recommendations developed by the Climate Leadership Team will be implemented in full.

Instead, BC will see its carbon emissions continue to rise until 2030, pushing real action off for another 15 years. In the best case scenario, emissions would be the same in 2030 as they are now. And even when emissions start to decline, the province will still miss its own emission targets for 2050.

BC needs a credible, ambitious, and inclusive plan to reduce carbon emissions.

As the provinces come together to develop a national climate plan, BC can no longer coast on a carbon tax that has been frozen for years. Not only do we risk the health of the planet, we will be left behind, missing out on economic opportunities and harming our well-being for decades to come.

BC has waited long enough. Add your voice to the call for real climate plan for BC. Tell Christy Clark to fully implement the recommendations of the Climate Leadership team.

Dear Premier Clark and Environment Minister Polak,

Your own government brought together the Climate Leadership Team, a panel of experts from academia, business, NGOs, First Nations and more to develop recommendations for a real plan for climate action. Not a single one of the 32 recommendations developed by the Climate Leadership Team will be implemented in full.

Under the BC Liberal plan, BC will see its carbon emissions continue to rise until 2030, pushing real action off for another 15 years. In the best case scenario, emission would be the same in 2030 as they are now. And even when emissions start to decline, the province will still miss our own emissions targets for 2050.

BC needs a credible, ambitious, and inclusive plan to reduce carbon emissions.

As the provinces come together to develop a national climate plan, BC can no longer coast on a carbon tax that has been frozen for years. We will be left behind, missing out on economic opportunities and harming our wellbeing for decades to come.

BC has waited long enough; we need a real climate plan. Your government can show real leadership on climate change by fully implementing the recommendations of the Climate Leadership Team.
