End the use of private immigration detention centers

The the Department of Homeland security is reviewing its use of private immigration detention facilities.

These detention centers are run by the same morally bankrupt corporations that operate private prisons all over the country. But instead of violent criminals, they house vulnerable people like pregnant women, children, and sex trafficking victims. Many of these people are not even undocumented, but instead awaiting a ruling from an immigration court.

These people do not belong in the deplorable conditions offered by the for-profit prison industry. And taxpayers shouldn't be on the hook for the more than $100 per night it costs to hold someone in a detention center.

Our immigration system is broken. It is a complicated mess of outdated laws that are nearly impossible to navigate. As a result, peaceful people seeking a better life for their family are locked in horrendous conditions and face the threat of violence and sexual abuse that is rampant in private detention centers.

As a nation, we are better than that. It’s time to make a change. Take action today to end the use of private immigration detention centers.
