Sign the National Catholic Pledge to End the Death Penalty

The death penalty represents a failure of our society to fulfill the demands of human dignity, as evidenced by the 159 people and counting who have been exonerated due to their innocence since 1973.

Catholic Mobilizing Network (CMN) is calling on all people of faith and good will to sign the National Catholic Pledge to End the Death Penalty.

Growing public opposition to the death penalty and the appalling executions the state of Arkansas held in April have galvanized our resolve to stand for life and end the use of the death penalty in this country. The death penalty risks innocent life and costs tax payers millions of dollars more than life without parole. More importantly, it is an egregious act against the dignity of the human person.

In a modern society where the death penalty is not needed to maintain public safety, punishment must "correspond to the concrete conditions of the common good and [be] more in conformity to the dignity of the human person." The death penalty does not align with this understanding of human dignity and must be abolished in the United States.

Sign your name to stand with Catholic Mobilizing Network and pledge to end to the death penalty!
"All Christians and people of good will are thus called today to fight not only for the abolition of the death penalty, whether legal or illegal, and in all its forms, but also in order to improve prison conditions, with respect for the human dignity of the people deprived of their freedom" - Pope Francis

In response to Pope Francis' call, I pledge to educate, advocate, and pray for the end of the death penalty:

educate - I will educate myself and my community about the injustices of the death penalty, including the ways it risks innocent life, fails victims' families, and contradicts the Catholic Church's pro-life teaching.

advocate - I will fulfill the call to discipleship by advocating for the dignity of all life, including those who are on death row and awaiting execution, and by actively working to end the death penalty in my state and in my country.

pray - I will pray for mercy and healing for all who are involved in the criminal justice system: victims of crime and their families, those in prison and on death row, communities where crimes are committed, and all who work in the legislative system.
