Urge Your Representative: Support Legislation To Condemn China's Dog Meat Trade!

More than 10 million dogs and countless numbers of cats are killed for human consumption every year in China.

Much of the world sees dogs as their trusted companions, but in parts of Asia they suffer terribly as victims of the trade in dog meat for human consumption. In some Asian countries, dogs used for this industry are mostly stolen pets and they are sometimes tortured before being slaughtered. The dog meat trade is not only cruel, but is also linked to the spread of rabies and other diseases.

U.S. Rep. Alcee L. Hastings has introduced a resolution condemning China's dog meat trade. H. Res. 30 calls on the Chinese government to end the dog meat trade and to better enforce food safety and animal transportation laws.

Please ask your U.S. Representative to cosponsor the resolution by using the form to the right to send a message. Editing your message will help it stand out.

Subject: Please cosponsor H. Res. 30

Dear Decisionmaker,

More than 10 million dogs are killed for human consumption every year in China. This trade involves animal cruelty, criminal activity including theft of pets and serious risk to human health, with the World Health Organization linking the trade to cholera and rabies.

Please cosponsor H. Res. 30, introduced by Rep. Alcee L. Hastings, to raise awareness of U.S. opposition to the cruelty taking place and call for an end to the dog meat trade in China. If you're already a cosponsor, thank you for your support.

The resolution does the following:

  1. Urges the Government of China to enforce the 2011 Agriculture Ministry of China Regulation that requires "one certificate for one dog" on board trucks transporting dogs for human consumption that cross provincial boundaries;

  2. Encourages the Government of China to enforce China's food safety laws regulating the processing and sale of animal products, which should preclude dog meat trade activity;

  3. Urges the National People's Congress of China to enact an anti-animal cruelty law with provisions banning the dog meat trade; and

  4. Affirms the commitment of the United States to the protection of animals and to the progress of animal protection around the world.

I hope you will lend your support to this important message by cosponsoring Rep. Hastings' resolution and doing all you can to get it passed.
