A dangerous trade pact between the U. S. and 11 countries along the Pacific Rim called the Trans-Pacific Partnership would strip our government's power to manage U.S. gas exports, opening the floodgates for fracking, sacrificing our air and water quality in order to feed foreign markets. So it's no surprise the United States Trade Representative is negotiating this trade agreement in almost complete secrecy.
To keep us in the dark some members of Congress are now proposing to fast-track the process in order to quietly and quickly push this trade agreement across the finish line without your input.
If Congress thinks they can flood our communities with more fracking thanks to a secret trade agreement, we'd better flood their offices with messages.
Tell Congress not to fast-track this trade agreement!
Dear [Decision Maker],
I am writing to express my strong opposition to "fast track" legislation, officially called the Trade Priorities Act of 2014, that would limit Congressional oversight over trade agreements, including the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) Agreement.
Fast track would allow the Executive Branch to sign the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement before Congress votes on it, and then would give Congress only 90 days to vote yes or no on the agreement, with limited debate and zero amendments.
Particularly for an agreement as expansive as the TPP, which would impact nearly every aspect of our lives from the quality of our food, air, water, and jobs, fast track is an outdated and inappropriate mechanism. Moreover, I find it particularly concerning that fast track may be granted for the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement, which has been negotiated in near complete secrecy, with very little public input.
