Tucson. Aurora. Newtown. Every day, 33 Americans are murdered with guns. It's time for Congress to put public safety ahead of politics and pass the common-sense reforms that Americans want and need.
- Require all states to submit comprehensive mental health records to the National Instant Background Checks System.
- Require every gun buyer to pass a criminal background check - Under current law, background checks are only required for licensed dealers and an estimated 40% of transfers are conducted without one.
- Make gun trafficking a federal crime - Gun traffickers fuel the illegal market for guns but under current law, the penalties available to crack down on them are about the same as those for trafficking in cows or livestock.
