Reduce Global Warming Emissions from Power Plants

What’s the most important step the Obama Administration can take right now to address climate change? The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is currently drafting new standards that will limit carbon emissions from new power plants—and it's critical that they do it right.

The EPA needs to hear from people like you today that you want them to issue strong, scientifically-sound pollution standards. But hurry! The comment period closes May 9.

Under the Clean Air Act, the EPA is tasked with reducing air pollution that harms public health—and that includes carbon emissions. Power plants are the largest source of carbon emissions in the United States today, so these new standards have the potential to be a significant step forward in tackling global warming while protecting our health, the environment, and our economy—but only if they’re done right.

The Clean Air Act has a 40-year track record of protecting human health and saving us money. In fact, as of next month the net benefits of this historic legislation will reach $55 trillion saved since 1970 when the law was first passed.

You can ensure the Clean Air Act continues to save money and lives. Tell the EPA today to issue strong, scientifically-sound standards to rein in global warming emissions from new power plants.

Dear Administrator McCarthy,

Please protect our health and reduce global warming emissions by finalizing strong, scientifically-sound carbon standards that reduce carbon pollution from new power plants.

I urge you to consider the important role that renewable energy should play in transitioning our nation away from fossil fuel-based energy generation to a low-carbon energy future. Expanding clean energy sources such as wind and solar can ensure that a shift away from coal does not result in an over-reliance on natural gas. A natural gas-dominated electricity system poses significant climate, economic, and public health risks and does not represent a long-term solution to global warming.

Please craft strong standards to limit carbon pollution from new power plants and work quickly to create strong standards for existing power plants.

Sincerely,
