420 11:57 am PDT, May 29 Mrs. Anonymous Ohio United States My 7 year old has been diagnosed with bipolar, adhd, odd, asperger, and schizoaffective disorder. His aggression and violence is getting worse and we can't get him in to any residential facilities.
419 10:08 pm PST, Jan 22   mary moore Tennessee United States I have a stepson that moved in with us after being severely abused by his mother for years. He has psychosexual behavior disorder. He is being treated like a criminal by the system while his mother, who created his problems by her treatment of him, is free a a bird and not being held liable. We cannot afford good treatment for him so we have to take what the state will give us. sexually abused children can become abusers themselves without the right kind of treatment. It's the only way to stop the cycle. But you have to have alot of money to do it.
418 2:02 pm PST, Jan 2 Ms. pamela burch Ohio United States I am signing this petition on here because I believe their are too many children that are living with severity mental issues today. These children are not able to cope in life by themselves. I have a step-child with severe behavior problems. His doctor rather have me on medication to deal with my step-sons problems.I think this is very lame of a doctor to even think this way. This is a major problem and I wish the government could do something about it.
417 11:31 am PST, Dec 15 Ms. torah lapan Virginia United States my son is in trouble substance abuse and odd behavior single mom on fixed income need help insurance will not pay

414 6:28 pm PDT, Oct 9   christina daniels Pennsylvania United States 3 children on spectrum, severe-aspergers
413 9:20 am PDT, Sep 12 Mrs. Anonymous Arizona United States I am signing this because my son has ADHD and has been recommended for a residential treatment facility...however they cost more per month that our total income per month. It seems to me that this should be covered by state funding.
412 9:00 pm PDT, Jul 31 Mrs. jennifer parpis New York United States My daughter has bipolar disorder and other illnesses, and I think that there should be more help to help these children that are so sick.
411 6:06 am PDT, Jul 17 Mr. Anonymous Illinois United States My daughter who is special eucted has medical diagnosis' with a reccommnedation for residential placement- I can not afford it and need help as to where a parent can go for help to receive good services funded from the state or federal help
410 3:38 pm PDT, Jun 27   Elizabeth Stambach California United States We can not find schooling or help for our asperger's, medically fragile teenager son.
409 11:40 pm PDT, Jun 21   Kathryn Hernandez Nevada United States
408 6:28 pm PDT, Jun 17 Mr. Seth Stern New Jersey United States
407 9:11 am PDT, Jun 16 Dr. erica bob New York United States i think this asowme
406 3:45 pm PDT, Jun 3   Anonymous Ohio United States my son is autistic and a teen. he has been very violent and aggressive towards me and our home. He also does self-injurious behavior. Its a disgrace that there are no facilities to treat him and what he needs is be in a residential program so he can be thoroughly evaluated and treated. THERE IS NONE AROUND MY AREA.
405 6:02 pm PST, Feb 17   Anonymous Tennessee United States So many kids need good residential treatment centers that can work with their needs so that they do not end up in jails when they get older. Considering, the overcrowding of jails, it only seems common sense to helping kids that have disabilities such as ADHD, conduct disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, etc get help while they are young. It would be a cheaper method to provide funding to parents needing assistance now than in the long run.
404 9:33 am PST, Feb 3 Ms. Anonymous Idaho United States My 21 yr old son lives with me and has Bi-Polar Disorder and ADHD. He has been in and out of a treatment center for the past 3 yrs. Doesn't seem to be any in house treatment living quarters for these young adults to recover with out the huge expense. He can't hold a job, and cannot pay for all the medical cost. The fact that it is so hard to get him on Social Security, plus the waiting period involved concerns me that there is not enough people with Bi-Polar getting the help they need. There for they commit suicide. I feel the government needs to step up and find a better way to support these people with this horrible disorder.
403 9:08 pm PST, Jan 9 Ms. Anonymous New Jersey United States Its time to take the first step to recovery and what better place to start it than at the home with the families.
402 10:16 am PST, Dec 11 Mrs. Anonymous Illinois United States I would like money spent on helping our teens to become evenly-tempered, non-destructive human beings that know what it means to respect and have compassion for others and to not expect something in return!
401 6:15 am PST, Nov 10 Mr. Anonymous New Jersey United States
400 8:46 am PDT, Sep 13 Mrs. Anonymous California United States I believe in helping people become better citizens by the method described here.
399 4:09 pm PDT, Aug 27 Mrs. beth spayd Pennsylvania United States my 15 year old nephew who lives with me has bi-polar and adhd. nothing seems to work. he needs residential treatment but i can not find or aford any. i'm afraid he will end up in prison or homeless unless he gets the help he need NOW!
398 8:23 pm PDT, Aug 23 Mrs. Patricia Harmon Rhode Island United States
397 10:18 am PDT, Aug 20   Carmen Colon New Jersey United States Because I wholeheatedly believe that when it comes to healthcare, mental or physical; Class, Race, Ethnicity and Economic Status SHOULD NEVER matter.
396 9:59 am PDT, Aug 20 Ms. DEBRA MCCALL Florida United States DEFINATE NEED FOR TREATMENT CENTERS! PRISON RECIDISM RATE IS OBNOXIOUS, JUST SAY NO DOES NOT WORK! WE CAN FUND WAR BUT NOT SPEND ON OUR OWN PEOPLE WHERE THERE IS A DEFINATE NEED!
395 9:33 am PDT, Aug 20 Ms. Nancy Rosario New Jersey United States Because my husband has an addiction. Wonderful guy who has no control. But when he's straight he makes my life heaven on earth. I sign this for all the wives/mothers/sisters/daughters/friends of addicts and those that need help! Stand with me and fight for the lives of those we love. We are not 2nd class citizens and neither are the ones that we love!!!

393 1:59 pm PDT, Aug 4 Mrs. Anonymous Pennsylvania United States to help the mentally ill.
392 9:36 am PDT, Jul 6 Ms. Anonymous Florida United States I work with families who are crying out for relief and help with children who have various mental health diagnosis, in Florida. So much emphasis these days is placed on brief short term therapy. These kids ineveitably end up in the correctional system because of the lack of residential treatment. Sadly there is not ANY respite for families with such high maintenence issues which appears to bring on even more mental health issues.
391 9:31 pm PDT, May 24 Mrs. Samantha Heatherly California United States These children will be in control of the world when we are seniors; think about it...very frightening indeed...

381 6:05 pm PST, Dec 12   Leslie Gregoire California United States
380 6:37 pm PST, Dec 11   Susan C. Indiana United States I have a child that needs residential treatment. The cost of residential vs insurance coverage leaves society with the risk of another 'statisic' of 'what if?'
379 6:10 pm PST, Dec 4 Mrs. Susan Hoadley Indiana United States My husband and I have an adopted child who has Fetal Alcohol Effects, OCD, ADHD, Autism, ODD, and a few others. He is now 11, we have tried everything with him, but he is so out of control. We love him dearly and know he could benefit from residential treatment , but we can't afford it. Eventually my beloved son will be another jailhouse statistic. So sad for us, him and society.
378 12:48 pm PST, Nov 30   Jennifer Megeney   Canada
377 12:13 pm PST, Nov 2   Jill Trimmer New Jersey United States
376 2:09 pm PDT, Oct 4 Mr. Bryan Connor Georgia United States I work with patients in programs such as this. This is the best alternative they have. If it reaches a few by changing their lives, keeping them out of jail and prevents family breakups, then it is worth it.
375 8:19 pm PDT, Sep 17   Jason Bowman California United States
374 1:23 pm PDT, Sep 15 Ms. Kathy Lamb Oregon United States
373 10:20 pm PDT, Sep 3   Linda Bonura Louisiana United States

371 10:33 pm PDT, Aug 22 Ms. Jennifer G Illinois United States I needed help as a teenager but repeatedly turned away for being on medicaid. Luckly things worked out for me but many teens aren't so lucky. Think again next time you look down on us because mentally ill/at-risk teens are just like everyone else. We want to succeed just like the rest of the world but sometimes we need that extra motivation
370 1:49 pm PDT, Aug 18 Ms. PAULA DCASTLES California United States please support this measure now!
369 1:30 pm PDT, Aug 15   Anonymous Kansas United States
368 6:25 am PDT, Aug 10   Kelly Norman Georgia United States My husband suffers from an addiction. I have been on the internet for treatment programs for him and have found none. He is a wonderful person with a bad problem. He needs treatment not punishment. I believe this is the case for most of our so called criminals.
367 9:10 am PDT, Aug 6   Sherry Heard Georgia United States
366 4:56 am PDT, Aug 5   Lovlei McKinnie Pennsylvania United States
365 9:10 am PDT, Jul 21   Tracie Fowler New Jersey United States I have a son who is ADHD who is out of control, to the point that I can't even handle him anymore. I feel overwhelmed and out of control yet I can't afford an ADHD Boarding school or resedential treatment which would be the best placement for him.
364 8:14 pm PDT, Jul 20   Anonymous California United States My son has been needing a residential treatment for some time and I really cant afford it. 362 10:14 pm PDT, Jul 16   Anonymous Iowa United States
361 4:10 pm PDT, Jun 30   Michelle Whitney Massachusetts United States
360 4:02 pm PDT, Jun 26 Ms. Brenda Schenk Washington United States I'd rather see people who are addicted to drugs frind outpatient treatment than going to jail for having the bad habit. If people are helped before they go down the long dark road to destruction, then our jails wouldn't be so over-crowded.
359 8:45 pm PDT, Jun 9   Deb Bloom Pennsylvania United States my 18 yr old daughter is currently in jail because of drug related crimes. The justice system in PA just doesn't see that it isn't necessarily the crime committed but WHY they committed it. Stop the addiction and you'll stop the crime
358 8:25 pm PDT, Jun 1   Vicki P. Hines North Carolina United States In the past I worked with the Youth Services Division for the State of Florida, from there I went on to work in the legal profession. I have handled what we call "criminal" cases. Some of the Pre Dispositional Reports we typed for the Judges in Florida were horrific. We must START TO take care of these matters WHERE THEY BEGIN, in the homes and the communities! We must try to nip these ever important matters in the bud before they become too big and out of control like so many others have already done, through NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN! We must give help where help is due!!!There have been so many young people ask for help and not get it. Then later we see them on TV after they have harmed someonely very badly or murdered someone!
357 3:36 pm PDT, May 20   Brian Reynolds New Jersey United States
356 6:43 am PDT, May 8   AJ Redford Kansas United States
355 10:36 am PDT, May 7 Ms. Ainsley Jo Phillips Indiana United States I believe that our society has focused on getting even too often and, instead, needs to focus on extending a hand and helping our lost sheep find their way back home.
354 6:19 am PDT, May 7   Jim Treacy   Australia
353 6:12 am PDT, May 7   Stephen R Hannon Massachusetts United States
352 4:06 am PDT, May 7   Anna Asbury Kentucky United States
351 10:36 pm PDT, May 6   Angie Carroll-clark Georgia United States

Spend Funds on Family Residential Treatment Centers

It costs Americans $64,000 per year to house a non-violent drug offender in jail, $42,000 in prison. Substance abuse is implicated in 80% of their crimes and 50-70% of them read below the sixth grade level. There is little treatment or education provided in prison, leading to a staggering 78.5% recidivism rate. It costs us $20-55,000 to place a child in foster care for one year and over 50% of them become incarcerated or addicted at some point. It would only cost us $26,000 to place a parent and two children in a family residential treatment program where they receive education, counseling, job and parenting skills. There are only a handful of these programs in America. There are thousands of jails and prisons. Please divert funds from imprisoning non-violent drug-offenders into building these treatment centers. Thank you.
