Stand up for First Nations Children

First Nations schools are chronically underfunded. As a result, they face serious health concerns such as high carbon dioxide levels, black mould contamination, rodent infestations, sewage fumes and unheated classrooms.

It is unacceptable for any child to have to go to school under these conditions. New Democrats are demanding that Stephen Harper commit to equal funding for schools on reserve. Because every kid deserves a fair chance — no matter where they go to school.

Stand up for First Nations children. Sign the petition today.
We, the undersigned residents of Canada, recognize the following:

- First Nations schools are chronically underfunded and still too often plagued by serious health concerns.

- On April 4, 2012, the House of Commons unanimously agreed to make Shannen's Dream — of equal access to good schools and quality education — a reality for First Nations students.

- On October 22, 2013, the Canadian government released a draft proposal for a First Nations Education Act that does not address the issue of ensuring equal funding for schools on reserve compared to their provincial counterparts.

- Without adequate funding, any First Nation Education Act will only set First Nations kids up to fail.

Therefore, we call on the Government of Canada to ensure that any new legislation for First Nations education be backed with a commitment to respect the principles set out in the Shannen's Dream motion, and provide equal funding so that First Nations children and young people can attend good schools, receive quality education, achieve their dreams, and be proud of their distinct cultures and languages.
