Congress: Protect Our Wolves and Grizzlies. Don't Gut The Endangered Species Act!

Right now, our endangered wildlife – including grizzly bears and wolves – are facing an unprecedented threat. Anti-wildlife politicians in Congress are moving to severely weaken the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

Passed in 1973, this landmark law is the strongest and most critical federal protection for preserving imperiled wildlife and their habitat. But now, legislators – often backed by the extreme trophy hunting and commercial trapping industries – are looking for every opportunity to undermine it.

Several lawmakers have introduced legislation that would revoke ESA protections for wolves in Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. The last time wolves were stripped of this protection in these states, more than 1,700 gray wolves were killed by trophy hunting and trapping.

Things don't look much better for grizzly bears. If the great bears are delisted, the states will take charge of managing them, and public officials in Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming seem to be chomping at the bit to open trophy-hunting season on grizzlies – for the first time in 40 years.

Thanks to the ESA, more than 99% of species under its protection have been saved from extinction while hundreds more are on the road to recovery. We owe it to our wildlife and future generations to never stop fighting to preserve this law.
