Old Faithful, Yellowstone Falls, and hot springs draw nearly 3 million visitors to Yellowstone National Park each year. However, coal pollution from power plants like the Colstrip coal-fired power plant in Montana is impacting the magnificent views and unique Yellowstone experience.
There is cost-effective technology that could clear the air at Yellowstone and dramatically improve the views, but Big Coal is lobbying the EPA hard to install second-best technology to help their bottom line.
We must ensure that present and future generations experience Yellowstone the way it was intended: clean, clear, and unspoiled by coal pollution.
Tell the EPA to require the best technology available to curb coal pollution on coal-fired power plants near Yellowstone National Park and preserve the park for years to come.
Subject: It's time to clean up at Colstrip; require SCR technology
Dear Mr. Daly,
Yellowstone is a national treasure that attracts people from across the planet to the Rocky Mountain West. For too long, we have all tolerated pollution from nearby power plants that clouds the views. Now that the EPA's regional office is developing a plan to correct this wrong, I ask that you do all that you can to protect the park by requiring that Selective Catalytic Reduction technology be mandated on eligible sources.
Under the draft plan already developed and available for public comment, your office has already determined that SCR technology is cost-effective at Colstrip. Furthermore, this technology is already in use at more than 200 facilities across the country. You also acknowledge that this technology would afford the most protection to Yellowstone and the over view sheds under consideration. It appears that the only reason that you are selecting lesser technology is to save polluters a few dollars. I think Yellowstone is worth more than that.
Please require that the owners of Colstrip install the best technology, SCR, to reduce haze-causing pollution. Yellowstone Park is a first rate experience that deserves better than second rate protections.
