LineageII game protection system - say NO to GameGuard
LineageII (http://www.lineage2.com/) is one of known leaders of MMORPG all around the world.
Some time ago it got external program protection system named GameGuard (http://eng.nprotect.com/nprotect_gameguard.htm).
Since then customers suffer due to regular issues with protection system.
Some programs can't be run during loaded game, soem can't function properly.
On Februrary 21, 2006 there was an update to protection system. New GameGuard version came clashes with even more system software and produces yet again many cases of inability to access game or crashes third party programs allowed by EULA.
As far as general resentment created by GameGuard arises, it's time to make a decision about changing protection utility/system.
First of all, GameGuard increases client lags and memory amount needed for the game.
It was obvious since implementation of Gameguard in C2. Some people say GameGuard takes up to 40% of CPU time and up to 100Mb of memory.

The game with woking GameGuard is quite laggy, that reduces players satisfaction.
Second, GameGuard significantly increases game load time. We have to wait for up to few minutes now to take a look at login screen.

Third, GameGuard conflicts with many applications, used by legit players. Several firewall applications, antivirus applications, remote control applications, program development applicatinos etc. are rendered ineffective or completely useless in conjunction with GameGuard.
Forth, GameGuard utilises protection methods prohibited for user programs. After Febrary 21 update gamemon.des writes something to memory of every active process in the whole system, including system processes. It's not the behaviour allowed to most user applications (or protection systems).
And last, but not least. GameGuard does not function as effective as intended. Countless bot parties are still there. Regardless of effectiveness at first weeks, the problem it was supposed to solve - botting, third party program usage - is not solved to the extent that community will be ever satisfied with.
We come across bots every signle day we enter the game. There are thousands of bots floating around (may be there are even more bots than legit players). The protection system simply doesn't work.
Needless to say, GameGuard was blocked easily by unnamed anti-hack system and after that game plays just fine (http://boards.lineage2.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=529616&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=7&fpart=1#529616). It only proves that GameGuard doesn't work.

Server-side protection is inevitable necessity in current situation.
Replace GameGuard with something less agressive toward legit players and more effective against unlegit ones.
