Don't Abandon Pets in Disasters

Target: The U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: The Humane Society of the United States
Rescue animals stranded by Katrina, and don'Â’t let animals be forgotten again!

Sign this petition to support The Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act (PETS Act, H.R. 3858), currently in Congress, that will protect pets in federal evacuation plans, and urge officials to save currently stranded pets.

Some Hurricane Katrina victims refused to leave home because they couldn't take their animals with them, resulting in even more casualties. Furthermore, the Humane Society of the United States believes that while more than 7,000 animals have been saved in Mississippi and Louisiana, hundreds more may still be in need of rescue more than a month after Katrina hit. Pressure is still needed to save these animals, and a formal policy is needed to protect pets in future disasters, like Hurricane Rita.

Dear Representative,

Federal disaster grants to state and local governments should include plans to protect pets in their evacuation plans.

Please support The Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act (PETS Act, H.R. 3858), sponsored by Reps. Tom Lantos, Christopher Shays, Barney Frank, Don Young and James Oberstar. This new bill would require that the state and local disaster preparedness plans required for Federal Emergency Management Agency funding include provisions that will protect household pets and service animals.

In addition, please send immediate aide to save the animals stranded by Hurricane Katrina. Already, animal protection groups are working overtime to save the animals they can, but they need more help. Please help families who lost nearly everything in the hurricane be reunited with their beloved animals.
We signed the “Don't Abandon Pets in Disasters” petition!

Why is this even a question if they should be abandoned or not? This is ridiculous. Of course they SHOULDNT be abandoned.I believe this falls smack dab in the same category as animal abuse,by leaving them behind.Im pretty sure alot of "animal abusers" and those alike, made it out of katrina just fine. From all the petitions i have signed its about time things change, they have rights.

When someone adopts a pet, this animal becomes a part of the family and should be treated as one in all aspects and situations.

Most people view their pets as another child, as part of their family. Alot of people, myself included would refuse to leave them behind to suffer and/or die needlessly. Personally I would not evacuate if leaving my children behind was the only option.

#1 Service animals are mainly all I am truely concerned about other than livestock which understandably would take much more money and rural people would require some help. What I propose is assistance in that move that should be preemptive to the diaster and be funded by FEMA. As for people who are running a kennel for the sale of animals they are on their own...but rescues should recieve additional help also funded by FEMA if they are 501 C(3). But...BUT...I do not think the HSUS should be the one to handle the money as they have shown themselves to be discredited or unfit to handle money.

because it's not right to ask family's that love their pet's to leave them during an emergency situation .. it's hard enough that people deal with evacuation's please don't make them part with innocent animal's .. and think of the animal's left behind .. their whole world changes and the family they have known is gone leaving them to starve in horrid condition's please don't do this to animal's or people .. do something for animal's too!
