Oppose the Crawford Nomination: he's trying to block birth control, let's block him!

Target: U.S. Senators
Sponsored by: NARAL Pro-Choice America
President Bush has nominated Lester Crawford, who helped block attempts to improve women’s access to birth control, for the top job at the Food & Drug Administration (FDA).

During Crawford's tenure as acting commissioner, the FDA has ignored the recommendation from its own scientific and medical experts and blocked "Plan B", which is an application to make the morning-after pill available without a prescription.

Speak out with two Senate Democratic leaders, Patty Murray from Washington and Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, who are holding up his nomination until the FDA acts on the application.

Urge your senators to join Senators Murray and Clinton and oppose the Crawford nomination.

UPDATE: On July 15th, Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) and Patty Murray (D-WA) succeeded in pressuring the Food and Drug Administration to make a decision on "Plan B", a petition to make the "morning-after" pill available to women over the counter instead of by prescription.

The FDA now has until to September 1st to decide whether to go along with the doctors and scientists who overwhelmingly support giving women over-the-counter access to the pill or capitulate to pressure from the radical right, which strongly opposes the measure. Consequently, the senators have lifted their hold on Lester Crawford's nomination to become the new FDA Commissioner.

Dear Senator,

As your constituent, I urge you to oppose Lester Crawford's nomination as the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration.

Under Crawford's leadership, the FDA has refused to act on an application to make the Plan B emergency contraceptive available to women over the counter. Crawford has admitted that the agency has settled any scientific questions and safety issues around this form of birth control months ago. He cannot provide a compelling reason for why the FDA continues to refuse to rule on this application.

It is critical that the FDA function without bias. Crawford has yet to demonstrate that he can lead an agency where science - not politics - should dictate.

If you are serious about reducing the unintended pregnancies and thereby reducing the need for abortion in this country - something we should all agree upon - then urge Lester Crawford to make Plan B available without a prescription. Until he does so, I urge you to oppose his nomination.

Sincerely,
[your name]
We signed the “Oppose the Crawford Nomination: he's trying to block birth control, let's block him!” petition!

The Supreme Court has up-held a woman's right to choose and this man wants to send us back to the stone age... where men "owned" their women's bodies... where we had no say of what happened to us. How many women died because they couldn't get medical attention? How many women were sent away or killed because the "shamed" their family? WOMEN have a right to their own bodies and to make decisions for themselves

We don't need to go back to the days of "back-alley" abortions. They have to great a risk of infection and/or death. And, we certainly don't need to have unwanted babies being born with the possibility they may never get adopted.

People are always talking about another unintended birth. We have an option to lower that rate and they try to take it away from us!? They can only blame themselfs if/when pregnancy rates get out of control.

Women have rights to and women definitely should have control over their own bodies. Men do and women should have the same equal rights as men. Thank you for listening and protect my right to choose what is right for me.

Why is it that nobody has any trouble with giving men access to Viagra, but giving women access to effective contraception presents big problems? Any guy who opposes emergency contraception for women ought not to be entrusted with an important public health position. What is President Bush thinking? Please do not support the Crawford nomination.

Isn't Crawford a man? I think a woman should be the only voice allowed to take action againt birth control. Have we seen China before? Do we really want to have a child limit law? Abortions are not a healthy resort and by using birth control and the 'Morning after pill' before the sperm meets the egg we can prevent murder by abortion or child abuse or neglegence. Mr. Crawford should consider the outcome before making such a drastic desision!

As a scientist, I am very disturbed that this administration keeps pushing ideology over good science. There are much better people for this job that will base their management on valid information. Please urge President Bush to reconsider.

I myself use birth control. BUT did Crawford ever stop to think that women not only use birth control to prevent an unwanted pregnancy but to help aide them in certain diseases and complications? I for one have Poly-cystic ovarian syndrome and take birth control to help correct this problem. Did Crawford also stop to think that with birth control out of the way, we will end up with more homeless, poverty-striken children?! I think he needs to think twice about his decisions, just because he thinks that birth control is not a good idea, doesn't mean it is.

If you've ever read about some of the scary things that women did around the turn of the century to end their pregnancies (you can find these articles in old medical journals), you would never want to disallow such a safe way of ensuring an unwanted pregnancy does not happen. Without the proper way to protect one's self, an unwanted pregnancy can result in health problems (if someone tries to take matters into their own hands) or children that are unwanted and unloved. Don't we have enough problems right now with how children are being raised? Let people decide when they are ready to parent a child the proper way!!

The right to choose what is right for your family and keep the size of your family to a reasonable size and live within your means to keep everyone healthy and happy. Why put extra financial and psychogical pressure on families these days? Imagine the population explosion and its consequences! Protect our FAMILIES and the RIGHT CHOICE!

Bush and his cronies want to keep women from having access to birth control methods and information, especially the "morning after" pill. Shame on all of them. If our roles were reversed and men had to worry about getting pregnant, you can bet they would be singing a different tune.
