untitled petition
Scotland County has been considering allowing Waste Management, Inc. and Republic Services, Inc. to dump up to 5,000 tons of garbage in the county per day. The siting of a mega-landfill in Scotland county will bring many toxic chemicals into the County and threaten the County's water supply. Lined landfills, as proposed by the companies and required by law, are safer than unlined landfills but are not completely safe. We should not import these risks to our county for a quick dollar.
The siting of a landfill will also make Scotland County the laughing stock of the state and country and cost the County much more money than the dumps will bring in. The County has been trying to improve its image to attract tourists, retirees, and businesses. None of these entities will want to visit or relocate to an area known for its willingness to accept other people's garbage.
Allowing a mega-landfill in Scotland County will risk everything that we have and everything that we are working for together. Please do not make Scotland County "The County of Mega-Landfills".
