Say No to Urban Sprawl

Target: President Barack Obama
Sponsored by: Care2

In a recent town hall forum, President Obama said, "The days where we're just building sprawl forever, those days are over. I think that Republicans, Democrats, everybody recognizes that that's not a smart way to build communities. So we should be using this money to help spur this kind of innovative thinking when it comes to transportation. That will make a big difference."

We need to be smart about our infrastructure and development plans. Urban sprawl not only increases pollution and reliance on fossil fuel through production and transportation, but it also often infringes on areas of dense wildlife and natural land, often for the purpose of housing only small amounts of people.

Smart solutions include mixed-use developments and transit-oriented developments. These decrease traffic, increase the use of public transportation and even reduce obesity rates. They also use land more efficiently, which helps keep natural lands and wildlife intact.

Small farms and communites are more effevtive in controlling our environmental impact. Planned high rises and open spaces provide less impact and negative green house gasses.

Urban sprawl is beyond bad! It was bad in the late 1960s! And now people wonder why wildlife wanders into their yards (formerly belonging to the wildlife), and wants the wildlife "controlled" - we all know what that means. And others want to know why we still have to pay tolls on roads - don't they know use of the roads, especially by heavy vehicles (read TRUCKS - but that's another issue involving the decline of the railroads since the 1950s), causes damage and requires upkeep?? Sometimes I just can't believe people don't understand these simple principles!
