Say No to Urban Sprawl

Target: President Barack Obama
Sponsored by: Care2

In a recent town hall forum, President Obama said, "The days where we're just building sprawl forever, those days are over. I think that Republicans, Democrats, everybody recognizes that that's not a smart way to build communities. So we should be using this money to help spur this kind of innovative thinking when it comes to transportation. That will make a big difference."

We need to be smart about our infrastructure and development plans. Urban sprawl not only increases pollution and reliance on fossil fuel through production and transportation, but it also often infringes on areas of dense wildlife and natural land, often for the purpose of housing only small amounts of people.

Smart solutions include mixed-use developments and transit-oriented developments. These decrease traffic, increase the use of public transportation and even reduce obesity rates. They also use land more efficiently, which helps keep natural lands and wildlife intact.

There is so much that can be done --better planning is needed and a moratorium on just building for the sake of the Greedy and not look into the future of what we are doig to our country.
