Free Liu Xia, Nobel Peace Prize Winner's Wife

Chinese authorities have been holding Liu Xia, the wife of Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo, under house arrest in her Beijing apartment since she visited her husband in prison to inform him about the award.

Authorities have not charged her with any crime.

Liu is denied telephone access, visitors, and legal aid, and may only leave her home when escorted by police car. She has been warned to not speak on behalf of her husband to anyone or give any interviews regarding the award.

Her husband is serving 11 years in a northeast Chinese prison for “incitement to weaken state power” with Charter 08, a publication asking for more democratic freedom from the Chinese government.

The Chinese government expressed outrage over the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize and consider it to be disrespectful to the Chinese legal system. These are the conditions that the Chinese people face.

Tell the Chinese government to give Liu Xia her freedom.
President Hu Jintao,

Liu Xia has not been charged with any crime, and thus should not be held under house arrest.

Under house arrest she is denied telephone access, visitors, and necessary legal aid, merely because she is the wife of the Nobel Peace Prize winner, Liu Xiaobo.

I know Foreign Ministry Spokeman Ma Zhaoxu has stated that the award is disrespectful to Chinese law, but the house arrest of Liu Xia and the imprisonment of Liu Xiaobo are violations of human rights.

I am writing to urge you to release Liu Xia from house arrest.
