BLM: Don't Kill Our Wild Horses

Target: Director James Caswell, Bureau of Land Management
Sponsored by: Care2.com
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has announced plans to kill America's wild horses rather than effectively manage our wild natural heritage.

BLM claims it can no longer afford to round up wild horses and confine them until it finds people to adopt them, and the agency wants to euthanize these majestic wild beauties or sell them to the highest bidder "without limitation" - meaning sell them to anyone, even if the bidder also plans to kill these horses.

Why does BLM need to round up wild horses and send them to slaughter? The BLM claims that the agency can't "allow horses to multiply unchecked on the range without causing an environmental disaster." But there are less than 30,000 wild horses on the range versus at least 3 million grazing cows. So rather than address the environmental damage caused by cattle overgrazing and expanding oil and gas exploration on our public lands, the BLM would rather placate corporate cattle ranchers who view mustangs as competition for forage, and drive wild horses - our country's symbol of freedom and independent spirit - to extinction.

This plan is simply outrageous. Stand up for our wild horses and send a comment to BLM today. Urge our government to abide by the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burro Act of 1971 and effectively manage the land to preserve wild horses rather than kill them!

Dear Director Caswell,

I am deeply disappointed with your proposal to kill or sell-off wild horses in confinement rather than develop a management plan to return these majestic animals to the range where they belong.

There are over three million cattle grazing on federal land, while fewer than 30,000 wild horses roam free. Your agency has more wild horses in confinement than on the range. I urge you to strike a better balance between cattle ranching and wild horses that will truly preserve our wild horses. Please consider alternatives such as expanded birth control programs, working with the National Park Service to add land to the range in areas where the horses already currently reside, and limiting the number of permits granted for mountain lion hunting to allow natural predation to control the herd population.

I am very disappointed with the way things are headed with the BLM. As a land managemant program I believe that they are NOT doing EVERYTHING in their power to prolong the life of these "American symbols". What would America be without a legacy? These beautiful, intelligent animals deserve the right to "survive" even if it's on their own. If the BLM isn't able to manage the funds that are given to them then maybe another program should come about. That way the BLM can't worry about it if they don't exist anymore! Maybe more responsible, caring people should be put into the correct positions. There are too many maybe's. So all I'm trying to say is that the Mustangs do not deserve to be euthanized. They deserve a fighting chance. Tell the BLM to stop playing "God".

These horses have been around for years and deserve to be able to continue to roam as they have in the past. I support managing them approppriately without killing them or selling them to killers. I also will continue to support them through donations as I have in the past.

Wild horses are part of our nation's history. Don't destroy them just because it's the easiest thing to do. There are always options and I'm confident there is a better alternative than killing innocent horses.

Our wild horses play a big part in the history of this country. Killing them is wrong. Please don't kill them!!

Wrong is wrong. You can NOT justify killing a part of America's history. These horses are a part of AMERICAN history. They helped to build America. They are a part of the "freedom " symbol of this great nation .The "spirit" of America. If you MUST kill something..........take out the criminals that get 25yrs for killing innocent citizens. Now that is a job worth doing, riddening America of murders. Not America's horses.

Not only am I surprised that you feel that killing off wild horses is a good solution to the problem of habitat availability, I am also surprised that you would do so to one of the great symbol's of America's wild environment. Selling the horses is a better solution than killing them, but I encourage you to find a better way to deal with the problem. Thank you.

To kill these animals is a crime of the worst kind. Wild horses symbolize the freedom that Americans enjoy each and every day, regardless of race, religion and ethnicity. Please, let's find another solution that makes sense.

I realize these are difficult times. The economy has been rough on citizens, American companies as well as Government Organizations such as the BLM. Now, more than ever, we need to preserve our Wild Mustang population. Though sometimes unappreciated, they are a magnificent symbol of the birth of this nation and what makes this country great. A powerful symbol of Freedom and the West. Please do not commit yourself and the BLM to the destruction of these wild horses. There are better ways to manage these wild herds. Equine birth-control, donation of the animals to prison rehabilitation facilities and I'm sure there must be other programs available. Once again, I beg you to please fight a little harder for the preservation of this American treasure. God Bless, Sandra FitzGerald

To murder these amazing animals that have played such an important part of our history instead of managing them or fostering them out to horse lovers with enough acreage to allow them the freedom they deserve! It is a crime equal to the Holocaust in Nazi Germany!!! Please, don't do this! ~C. J. McReynolds

It seems that in these past few decades those simply monumental and natural beauties of our earth have become extremly rare if not extinct at all! It is up to our government who represent our peoples choices to help stop these devastating depletions of our worlds natural wonders! The wild horses of America need to be protected in order to preserve our worlds wonders. What makes the list for all the land and animal preservations currently throughout our country? This decision needs to be better developed and balanced instead of pushed aside because it is seen in your eyes as unimportant! Please reconsider and help save one of our worlds so rare beauties!

These beautiful animals deserve respect and protection. How can you sleep at night, knowing what you're trying to do on a daily basis? It must'nt be very well. Please, please reconsider, and find a better plan, with a better balance.
