Help End the Dysfunction in Springfield

In Illinois, the partisan map-drawing process has created political maps that serve politicians—not the people. Right now, redistricting is a backroom process where politicians draw their own districts behind closed doors, ensuring races won't be competitive and incumbents are protected. This conflict of interest has created a broken system where voters can't hold politicians accountable.

A year-long budget crisis is the ultimate sign of government dysfunction. Springfield is broken and it's clear we can't let these same politicians continue to draw districts for themselves so they can win re-election without any real challenges. The Independent Map Amendment would ensure the people of Illinois have a voice in the political process by establishing a nonpartisan, impartial and transparent commission to draw a political map that works for all of us.

While the Independent Map Amendment won't fix everything, it is a step in the right direction. It will help to create a system that encourages competitive races, meaning politicians will have to be more responsive to independent and moderate voters, not just extremists in their own party.

For far too long, politicians picked their voters rather than the other way around. Let's take a step toward fixing what's broken in Springfield and a government that works for all of us.
