Help Bring Peace to South Sudan!

  • by: CARE USA
  • recipient: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon
The conflict in South Sudan has killed tens of thousands, forced nearly 2 million people from their homes and placed millions of children in jeopardy. Women and girls still bear the brunt of insecurity and remain vulnerable to sexual exploitation and violence. And unfortunately, it’s likely that even more suffering and acute hunger lie ahead in the coming months.

Please help bring peace to the people of South Sudan by signing our letter calling for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon to:
  • Increase pressure on the warring parties to end the violence
  • Support activities to assist and protect women and girls
  • Ensure the engagement of women in peace-building and reconciliation initiatives
  • Encourage the global community to quickly provide humanitarian assistance
Dear UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon,

The suffering of the South Sudanese today, particularly that of women and girls, is indefensible. In the words of the United Nations Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict, Mrs. Bangura, “the bodies of women and children are the battleground of this conflict.” In their struggle for power, the warring parties continue to disregard the hardship of their own people.

To end the violence in South Sudan, more international pressure must be brought to bear on leaders of both parties in the conflict. We ask you to call on United Nations Security Council (UNSC) members to strengthen and support existing mechanisms to monitor violations of international humanitarian and human rights law and hold perpetrators to account.

We call on you to ensure that all actors — including the international community — are responsive to and held accountable for protecting civilians in South Sudan, especially women and girls.
UN agencies and donors must do more to advance implementation of the Call to Action on Violence against Women and Girls (VAWG) in Emergencies, prioritizing life-saving VAWG prevention and response. Further, it is crucial that the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) be supported in more aggressively fulfilling its protection of civilians mandate, with specific attention to the needs of women and girls. Clear accountability mechanisms to monitor and report on fulfillment of this mandate should be promoted.

In all efforts to move beyond war and toward sustainable peace, it is crucial that the UN enhance broad-based community participation.
Specifically, women’s obstacles to inclusion must be recognized and overcome. Such efforts must happen now to ensure that all subsequent processes of peace and reconciliation secure a space at the table for women.

We cannot forget the tremendous humanitarian needs of the people of South Sudan, particularly for women and girls who have borne the brunt of the conflict. The humanitarian community urgently needs over $800 million to help mitigate the grave hardships being faced by South Sudanese, especially with the anticipated increase in the upcoming dry season violence and the potential for severe food insecurity in the new year. Please call on all member states to honor their obligations to contribute to the humanitarian cause.
