222 7:36 pm PDT, Jul 2 F. Thibodeau 40 Male MOntreal   h2v 3x7 Canada none none Taking Lariam is like playing Roulette Russe. You do not know if it will it you, and if it does you can`t go back. Its been 10 years I am suffering from Lariam. I reported my case to Roche. They took my report never followed up and never offered any help. They have knowned the amplitude of the risk for a very long time and failed to inform properly the customers. The published statistic of one person in 13,000 getting a bad reaction is false. But roche obviously does not want the real numbers to get out. We are now thousand of victims and many of us could have been saved if we had been propperly informed of the risks.

219 3:33 pm PDT, Jul 2 Al Graham 43 Male Hastings   TN34 United Kingdom none not sure In the latest (UK) warning about Lariam it states that "because of the long half-life of mefloquine, adverse reactions to Lariam may occur or persist for more than several weeks after the last dose." This is misleading as the half-life does not refer to the amount of the drug entering the brain tissue, where it does most harm. No one knows how long it remains absorbed in the brain. Symptoms can therefore last for many years. People think they will get over the effects fairly quickly. This is a false assumption.
218 3:27 pm PDT, Jul 2 Pamela Maule 51 Female Iron Mountain Michigan 49801 United States none I can't answer this question. Beside the military, Lariam should be banned completely from use including use in the Peace Corps and with world travelers. My son experienced problems with Lariam while serving in the Peace Corps.

Not enough information is given to soldier’s prior injection time during line ups for any vaccines. Psychiatric drugs for military members should be a choice and all information to the drug should be supplied to the service member or veteran before being prescribed any types of these drugs. I feel the military and VA are very easy on writing any type of psychiatric medications. There are many non pharmaceutical remedies to heal the mind than something white, yellow, blue or pink.

189 8:52 am PDT, Apr 18 Suzanne Marmion 34 Female Lilongwe   12 Malawi US citizen protected by our troops. Just focusing on Lariam here. After taking the three "trial" pills of Lariam (which is all it takes to trigger most adverse reactions, that can last for years), I suffered vestibular damage, i.e. brain damage which is permanent and causes dizziness and seizures. I went from being a healthy journalist at the peak of my career leaving for a foreign assignment, to not working for many months and suffering from a list of major problems, including sudden and inexplicable urges to kill myself or hurt others. More than a year and a half later now, I still suffer seizures from the neurotoxic effects of mefloquine. There are two equally powerful anti-malarial medications on the market which don't have nearly the same risk-rate of mefloquine, nor such serious side affects: doxycycline and Malarone.

I had to help the remaining family members after that. Uranium used in penetrator bombs and bullets and as armor. Napalm, Cluster bombs used in civillian areas, etc The Army Needs To Have A Way To Defend Against Incompetent and Criminal Commanders that have them carry out war crimes. The Army Needs a Union Like Structure that defends them and brings the unjust crimes against the TROOPS, who are American Citizens, where they can be aired in a PUBLIC COURT and give the TROOPS the Justice that they deserve. Bush and his administration must be made to pay for all of the horrible crimes they have commited against mankind and nature.

183 3:19 am PDT, Apr 17 Kim Sanders-Fisher 0 Female Hastings Old Town   TN34-3EN United Kingdom None, I do work as a Medical Volunteer for overseas NGOs Any drug developed by the Military for the Military must be subjected to rigerous independant testing. There is a serious conflict of interest when the US Military focus only on their soldiers as expendable killing machines. Just because many of those recruted by the US Military are drawn from ethnic minority backgrounds, are often poor and therefore vulnerable, does not mean they can be used as cheap lab rats! US Peace Corps Volunteers were also "used" in a similar quite unethical way as "test" subjects: at one point taking Lariam was a condition of service. Other overseas NGO staff know better and will not use Lariam due to the dangers. I took a total of just 6 tablets prescribed by my travel clinic at Johns Hopkins Hospital. During my tour of South America I only needed protection from Malaria for a single week on the Amazon river. I was was still taking the drug while I was back at my job in the Operating Rooms after my return to the US. I was never warned of the real dangers to my own health or compramise of my ability to function safely during Surgery. "Making unreasonable demands for accommodation of an undiagnosed medical condition" was not well tollerated at Hopkins. Lariam remained in my system for well over a year after I had stopped taking it. I was tormented by graphic dreams lasting throughout the night disturbing my sleep and leaving me permanantly exhausted. I still have very vivid dreams. With no recognition of the real cause of my ongoing medical problem I was forced out of my job. This is a dangerous toxic substance that destroys people's lives; it certainly helped to destroy mine.

172 8:46 pm PDT, Apr 15 Bill Manofsky 47 Male Ridgecrest California 93555 United States Commander USNR - I took Mefloquine during Operations Southern Watch and Iraqi Freedom. I am disabled from the drug. Bromide tablets used for nerve gas 1. Walter Reed now admits that Mefloquine is a neurotoxin. Go to LARIAMINFO.ORG to see the latest research on Mefloquine from Walter Reed, the inventor of the drug. The results are summarized in a published last month (Mar2006) on lab rats. 2. When Mefloquine was first "approved" by the FDA, no neurotoxic testing was required. To perform this latest testing on lab rats, Walter Reed actually had to go to the EPA for a test protocol since the FDA does not have one. Mefloquine caused injury to the rat's brain stem in the part that transmits balance(vestibular) signals. 3. In a paper written in 2003, Walter Reed said that Mefloquine passes through the blood brain barrier and can collect as much as 30 fold in the cental nervous system over blood plasma levels. They reported that the neurotoxic concentration of mefloquine is 25 micro moles and they found as much as 50 micro moles in the brains of human post mortem cases. They also found up to as much as 90 to 100 micro moles in the brains of lab rats. Again, they never performed neurotoxic testing prior to the use of this drug on humans. Preventing malaria was the primary focus.

Probably one of the greatest of its and its manufacturers crimes is that most victims are left without medical support during a time of intense physical and psychological distress. There are other anti-malarial drugs that can be used in place of Lariam -the terrible cost to innocent individuals should be stopped.
