China: Let Joey Cheek Travel to Beijing!

Target: Chinese officials
Sponsored by: Care2.com
2006 Olympic gold medalist Joey Cheek is the president and co-founder of Team Darfur, an international coalition of athletes committed to raising awareness of and ending the human rights crisis in Darfur, Sudan. Team Darfur advocates celebrating the Olympic Spirit as a means to educating the public about Darfur, and does NOT call for a boycott of the 2008 Games.

Yet hours before Cheek was scheduled to leave for Beijing to promote Team Darfur's message of peace for Darfur during the 2008 Olympic Games, Chinese officials revoked his visa and denied him entry with no reason given.

The Bush administration has already committed to protesting this latest outrage. Please help us stand up for Joey Cheek, Team Darfur and the right to free expression. Urge China to reverse their decision and allow Joey Cheek entrance during the 2008 Olympic Games!

We the undersigned are deeply disturbed at your government's decision to revoke athlete Joey Cheek's visa at the last minute with no reason.

Joey Cheek is a peaceful advocate for human rights in Darfur. His organization, Team Darfur, celebrates the Olympic spirit, supports all of this year's athletes and does not advocate a boycott of the Games.

By revoking Joey Cheek's visa immediately before the start of the 2008 Olympic Games your government is violating the the Olympic spirit. We urge your government to show the world that China is committed to the promises it made to the Olympic community of increased openness and promotion of human rights by immediately reissuing Joey Cheek's visa to enter China during the 2008 Olympic Games.
We signed the “China: Let Joey Cheek Travel to Beijing!” petition!

China is a sovereign nation and has every right to deny entry of whomever she chooses. How about you pull your murdering troops out of the oil countries so gas prices will again be affordable??

China tries to give itself a good image, but actions like this and their treatment of animals, their own people, and the environment speak otherwise. I have never seen such a bunch of lying hypocrites as the Chinese government officials. They do nothing to prove that image wrong, they only make it worse! Not allowing Cheek to come to Beijing is an insult to the USA and to the rest of the peaceloving countries of the world. Not that China would ever give a crap about what we say. I will never buy a product from China and I will definitely boycott the Olympics. China still has the rules, government, and mindset of medieval feudal kingdoms where the lord, i.e. the government, is only out for its own good, nevermind the people it steps on in the process.

Suppression of the truth is not a successful long-term strategy. As they say, it will set you free.

Joey did nothing wrong, it's completely ignorant to revoke his visa without a giving a reason (though it's seems pretty clear why they did it) It's pretty sad China strives so hard (not always in the best ways) to make their country look good, yet this proves how restricted and un-caring they can be towards others goals and beliefs. Let Joey travel to Beijing!

One's word is only as good as one's actions. Let Joey Cheek into China and truely start to display tolerance with understanding that we all have a right to live a dignified and free life as inhabitants of this Earth. China, during these Olympics you have a rare opportunity to start showing the world that you do have compassion and respect for your people through dialogue. This in turn, with your global influence can have a powerful effect on making changes to other regions of the world such as Darfur and Tibet. It is time to finally allow the 14th Dalai Lama to go back to his native land and live out the rest of his days in peace.

Joey is not doing anything wrong. He at least deserves a reason for being denied entry into China.

I signed the petition without hesitation as I believe Joey Cheek should be allowed to attend the festivities. However .. I am under no illusions that the government of China really cares what I think .. lol. All they are interested in is putting on a good show and making the world view them in a positive light .. which is hard to do considering the actions they have taken to try to insure that result .. and garner more gold medals than the USA. If ever there was a "wolf in sheeps' clothing" .. China is a good example. Also .. does anyone else detect a hint of hypocrisy in GW's rhetoric concerning the USSR's actions in Georgia .. in light of his own behaviour in Iraq ??

I have lost all respect for China seeing that they do not believe in the olympic spirit by denying a top competitor entry to participate in an international event. This action together with their support of genocide in Darfur says to me the world should boycot and isolate China until they show some inkling of care for people and the environment.

Please let him in. The international community is watching, and when you deny access to peaceful activists like Cheek, it simply looks bad. Please reconsider your position on this!
