Help Prevent Shaken Baby Syndrome!

Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) is a form of child abuse that results from violently shaking an infant or from abusive impact to an infant's head. Between 1,200 and 1,600 of the nation's children suffer from SBS each year.
Congressional findings estimate that between one-quarter and one-third of SBS victims die as a result of their injuries, while one-third suffer permanent and severe disabilities, including traumatic brain injury, paralysis, seizures and loss of hearing or vision.
To protect the nation's most vulnerable citizens from such tragic and preventable maltreatment, the U.S. Congress has introduced the Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention Act of 2007 (S. 1204 and H.R. 2052).
The bill enables the Secretary of Health and Human Services to develop a national public health campaign that would inform the general public, new parents, child care providers, health care providers and social workers about the risks and dangers associated with SBS.

Too many babies have died for a senseless reason. More parent and caregiver training is needed to help parents. Also mental services for families are needed to deal with the stress of having a new baby as well as more affordable health care. This legislation will help!

It is dangerous and it is extreme physical abuse. In 1980, Ilene Scotti, psychotic woman in Los Angeles,was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon on Dante Marshall. The weapon was her purse (I am not sure how the legal proceedings against her played out). The reason it was a deadly weapon was because Dante was three years old. Shaking an adult is not attempted murder but shaking a baby is attempted murder because the risk of death is as high as hitting an adult with a baseball bat.

I am directly affected by the horrible effects of shaken baby syndrome. My friends child was shaken by a trusted relative. Baby Zoie now suffers partial blindness, paralyzation on her left side and cognative delays from the SBS. She has fought hard to survive and overcome huge obstacles and will continue to do so the rest of her life. SBS is not widely known abotu still and we need to do something about it! Our children's lives depend on us to be their voice.

My son was shaken by our nanny at 4 months old. I can't put into words what this has done to him and our family. It is a senseless non-accidental act that has to be stopped! Furthermore I can't believe that an act so horrible which results in so many deaths and serious disabliities is punished so lightly. There are people out there who have been hired as caregivers and have shaken babies. Nothing has been done to stoip them from securing another care-giving job; in fact, justice has not been served against these ticking time bombs.
