Please intervene in the barbaric sentencing of Meriam Yehya Ibrahim Ishag who is to be hanged

Update, June 25, 2014

Meriam was freed from prison on June 23, after an appeals court cancelled the death sentence imposed for apostasy -- and then detained the very next day, when she tried to leave Khartoum with her American-South Sudanese husband, Daniel, and their two children, Martin and Maya.

Daniel and the children have since been released and cleared of any wrongdoing. Meriam has been released on bail. She cannot leave Sudan until the matter is resolved. She could still face more charges and more time in jail for using a South Sudanese passport which Sudan's National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) claims is false.

Meriam and her family are now in the U.S. Consulate waiting to hear from the authorities. She has applied for a Sudanese passport; it could take time before she receives this. U.S. consular officials and Meriam’s lawyers are currently working with the Sudanese Government and the NISS.

To all those who have signed this petition, thank you for your support of Meriam and her family. Please share this petition widely: "Unprecedented international pressure" played a role in Meriam's release from prison and the lifting of the death sentence. Let us do everything we can to ensure they can leave Sudan as soon as possible.

(Below is the original text of the petition.)

Meriam Yehya Ibrahim, also known by the Islamic name Adraf Al-Hadi Mohammed Abdullah, has been sentenced to 100 lashes and death by hanging by the neck by a Sudanese court for apostasy after she left Islam and married a Christian man.

Meriam gave birth to a baby daughter on 27th May in prison. She will receive 100 lashes two weeks later. Her two year old son Martin is also in her cell with her.

She was convicted of adultery on the grounds that her marriage to a Christian man from South Sudan was void under Sudan's version of Islamic law, which says Muslim women cannot marry non-Muslims.

The woman was originally sentenced to death on Sunday but given until Thursday to return to Islam.

She calmly told the judge: "I am a Christian and I never committed apostasy."

Amnesty International said Meriam was raised as an Orthodox Christian, her mother's religion, because her father, a Muslim, was reportedly absent during her childhood.

Please sign this petition for for the sake of Meriam and her family urging The US and UK governments to put pressure on the President of Sudan to free Meriam. As she was born and raised as an Orthodox Christian, she can't be guilty of apostasing from Islam and is certainly not guilty of adultery.

I found this website to complain about the cruel sentence of hanging passed on Meriam Yehya Ibrahim Ishag.

http://www.sudan.gov.sd/index.php/ar/ecomplaint. It is in Arabic, but I right-clicked and translated it to English. It was still a little hard to work out, but I did manage to send an email. It might be worth you sharing it.

Just to update you on what I know at the moment. The Sharia Law Court in Sudan will only flog Meriam 100 times as soon as she has given birth to avoid damage to the baby and she will be hung as soon as the child reaches the age of 2.

If you want to keep in touch with me please send me a friend request on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/SBDolby or follow me on Twitter @StephenBDolby

I send each one of you my thanks and my very warmest regards.
