There are nearly 24 million children and adults in our country who are living with diabetes and another 57 million have pre-diabetes. Lack of insurance and high health care costs are forcing many people to cut back on - or even go without - doctor visits, medications and diabetes supplies.
Our current health care system fails to ensure access to adequate and affordable health coverage, especially for those living with a chronic health condition like diabetes. Without adequate care, too many suffer needlessly from preventable and costly complications like amputation, blindness, heart and kidney disease.
The current health care system needs to be changed. Health care reform needs to ensure:
- People are not denied coverage because they have diabetes or required to pay higher premiums because of they have a chronic disease
- Health insurance covers basic diabetes needs
- Access to the tools to prevent diabetes
- An end to the racial and ethnic disparities in how diabetes affects Americans
This is the only way to change the future of diabetes in our country. Tell your members of Congress to adopt a health care system that works for people with chronic disease!
We signed the “People with Diabetes Need Health Care Reform” petition!

Everyone deserves help with health care, not just people who don't have pre-existing conditions. What is the difference between having a condition, or discovering you do while you have insurance. Heath care is still needed, regardless.

I am a type 2 diabetic and have health care insurance currently but am concerned every day about the additional cost of supplies and medications as well as the prospect of losing the that insurance. We are retired and on a fixed income. We have both been forced to return to the labor market to meet our expenses.

I am a pwd and have not been able to afford supplemental support such as nutrition counseling and so forth. Luckily for me, I have an informed and caring primary care doctor; and I am comfortable researching topics on my own. However, few PWD's are able to be self advocates with the resources to do so. I'm also tired of having diabetes dismissed as "it's your own fault" disease so "just lose weight, get a new life, whatever. Just don't bother me with it."

Diabetes must be addressed. Medical care must not be based on an insurance company's bottom line. The heath of our country's people should not be based on how much money they make but on medical need.

I have diabetes and it's not fun. Knowing that children will be getting it more than ever is a sad fact. If you don't have insurance your in a dire state. We need a healthcare system that will help to care and cure this disease.

As someone who has diabetes and is now looking for health insurance, I find myself getting quotes of $880 to $3,000 even though I am losing weight and getting healthier. This is wrong.

My husband is a Type 2 diabetic. It is a terrible disease. It takes a lot to keep it under control. Doctor visits (PCP, podiatrist, optometrist) are essential to the health of a diabetic. If a person lacks insurance, he or she is open to a series of health problems, if not loss of life. My husband has neuropothy (no feeling in his feet). Due to this condition he fractured his foot a couple of years ago and didn't know it. His foot blew up, he went to his podiatrist and found out it was fractured. He can no longer wear store bought shoes. He has to wear custom made shoes along with orthotics (in addition to 2 braces to keep the bones in his feet from shifting).

As a Type 2 Diabetic, I know better than most than not everyone has employer paid lifetime health coverage as I do. Diabetes is expensive even when under "excellent control" — but its complications can be deadly. No one should lose his/her sight, a limb or healthy kidney function because of failure to cover the preexisting conditions of Juvenile or Type 2 Diabetes.
