Help Protect Threatened Coral Reefs

According to the World Resources Institute, all coral reefs will be under threat by 2050 if we don't take action today.

Evidence of coral decline can be seen around the world—like in Fiji, where the Kubulau communities noticed their fish stocks depleting in the 1990's. Fishermen came home with less and struggled to feed their families. With the reef deteriorating and fish disappearing, they knew they needed to take action.

The Coral Reef Alliance unites communities like the Kubulau districts to preserve and restore coral reefs. Through collaborative efforts, the Kubulau community successfully implemented 17 tabu areas (non-fishing) and three marine protected areas. They set up a sustainable financing model where user fees from divers support the care of the marine reserves, provides scholarships for the children, and finances community projects.

The result is 78 square kilometers of protected and restored marine habitats—with improved food security, increased fish populations, and restored biomass in places where fishing is permitted.

Uniting communities around the world is absolutely crucial for coral reef preservation. It requires the talents and efforts of a passionate and strong alliance: a coalition of local community members, tourism businesses, governments, and scientists. Together, we can help preserve coral reefs for future generations.

Please join the Coral Reef Alliance and support our efforts to save coral reefs around the world!
