Protect the Presidio of San Francisco!

URGENT REQUEST! The future of the Presidio of San Francisco hangs in the balance!

The Presidio is the most unique unit of America's national park system, and part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Please ask the Presidio Trust to manage the Presidio for public, not private, purposes.

  • Choose tenants according to potential contributions to the Park's mission, not their ability to pay the highest possible rent;
  • Cap employment and housing rates;
  • Restrict operating costs;
  • Control new development and ensure the Presidio as a National Historic Landmark District!

We must generate as many public comments as possible on the petition below by October 25, 2001. Send a strong message to the Presidio Trust that the final plan should not only control costs, but also protect park resources far better than the preferred plan does.

Dear Mr. Pelka,

I am writing to ask you to abandon your preferred PTIP plan for the Presidio and to adopt instead a plan under which the Presidio will serve public purposes, its historic and natural resources will be protected, and operating costs will be tightly controlled.

Specifically, I believe that your draft plan threatens to compromise the Presidio's historic and natural resources and cannot be justified on financial grounds. Neither extensive new development nor significant increases in employment or housing are necessary for financial self-sufficiency. The plan's failure to control operating costs is inconsistent with your financial mandate. Rather than creating a business park or an elite "destination" at the Presidio, I believe it should be a place at which:

- Tenants are chosen on the basis of the contributions they can make to the Park's mission, not their ability to pay the highest possible rent;
- New development, including new construction, is kept below 5 million square feet to avoid jeopardizing the Presidio's status as a National Historic Landmark District;
- Employment and housing are capped at modest levels, consistent with the Presidio's status as a part of our National Park System;
- Operating costs are tightly controlled, and do not include expenses like your $2.9 million public relations budget.

The Trust's own financial data reveal that the Presidio's financial mandate can be met, provided operating costs are controlled. I respectfully request that the final plan not only control costs, but also protect park resources far, far better than the preferred plan does.

Sincerely,
The Undersigned
