Urge Senators to Support Ocean Treaty!

Target: U.S. Senate
Sponsored by: Care2.com
Many of the world's fisheries are already drastically depleted. Coral reefs and other critical habitat are badly degraded. And excessive pollution continues to threaten marine life and human well-being.

Our oceans and marine wildlife need our help.

The UN Convention on the Law of the Sea would help protect dolphins, whales and other marine species by improving international coordination of ocean conservation efforts, especially on marine protected areas and high seas fisheries and in the battle against ocean pollution.

Ratification of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea is long overdue. President Clinton signed the treaty in the 1990s. The 2004 Republican-led Senate Foreign Relations Committee unanimously endorsed it. President Bush and the Navy have both spoken out in favor of ratifying this important treaty. But this treaty has been held up in the Senate for years.

Please sign this petition today to urge your senators to stand up for ocean wildlife and support ratification of the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea!

Dear Senator,

I am writing to urge you to support Senate ratification of the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Ratifying UNCLOS will be a critical and long overdue step in fostering better relations with the global community.

Many of the world's fisheries are already drastically depleted. Critical habitat -- such as coral reefs -- is badly degraded. And excessive pollution continues to threaten marine life and human well-being.

The U.S. is one of only a handful of countries in the world that still hasn't ratified this important treaty. It is time to join with the international community to protect our ocean wildlife.

Unless we coordinate to achieve healthy oceans, marine species and their habitats will be impaired and the oceans' health will suffer for generations. That's why I strongly urge you to support Senate ratification of UNCLOS. The creation of marine protected areas, better regulation of high seas fisheries and the battle against ocean pollution all will benefit. Migratory marine species, such as dolphins, will be better protected.

The oceans and the biological diversity they contain cannot afford for us to miss this opportunity. I ask you to speak up for ratifying UNCLOS.

Sincerely,

Humans are te only kind of animal who would not have a bad impact on the world if it was to disappear. On the contrary, actually.
