Increase Alzheimer's Research Funding

Alzheimer's is the most expensive disease in America. Over the next 40 years, caring for people with Alzheimer's disease will cost our country $20 trillion, with nearly 60 percent of that borne by Medicare. If we had a treatment that delayed onset of Alzheimer's by just five years, Medicare spending would be reduced on those with the disease by 45 percent in 2050. Coming on the heels of an unprecedented $122 million increase for Alzheimer's research, education, outreach and caregiver support in early 2014, Congress added an additional $25 million for research in the FY2015 budget. Still, a chronic underinvestment in Alzheimer's research persists. For every $100 that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) spends on Alzheimer's research, Medicare and Medicaid spend $26,500 caring for those with the disease.
But your elected representatives in Washington have the power to help change that.

As an Alzheimer's Association advocate, I am writing to request that you show your support for Alzheimer's research by sending a letter to the Chair and Ranking Member of the Appropriations Committee supporting a $300 million increase for Alzheimer's research activities.
The soaring global costs of Alzheimer's and dementia care, the escalating number of people living with the disease, and the challenges encountered by affected families demand a meaningful, aggressive and ambitious effort to solve this crisis.
America cannot continue down its current path -- it is up to you to change the trajectory of Alzheimer's disease. Today, the more than 5 million American's living with Alzheimer's cost our nation an estimated $220 billion, including $153 billion to Medicare and Medicaid. If we fail to make a difference right now in the fight against Alzheimer's, the number of Americans living with Alzheimer's could soar to as many as 16 million in 2050. Costs from Alzheimer's on its current path between now and 2050 will total $20 trillion.
The urgency is clear. Alzheimer's can't wait.
This enormous and unsustainable strain on the healthcare system, families, and federal and state budgets is avoidable with federal leadership. We must ensure that the first-ever National Alzheimer's Plan is smart, effective and has the resources needed to change the trajectory of Alzheimer's disease. The Plan outlines critical steps our nation must take to address the full spectrum of the Alzheimer's crisis. Congress must continue its bipartisan support for its implementation.
In order to change the trajectory of this devastating disease, we must take bold steps now towards providing better supports for the millions of Americans navigating Alzheimer's and finding the needed treatments, prevention and, one day, a cure.
In order to secure for your constituents and all Americans a means to prevent, stop or simply even slow the fatal progression of Alzheimer's disease, I ask you to show your support for Alzheimer's research by sending a letter to the Chair and Ranking Member of the Appropriations Committee supporting a $300 million increase for Alzheimer's research activities. With your leadership, we will one day be able to celebrate the first Alzheimer's survivor.
