It is disturbing when a pet or a child is hit by a speeding vehicle in a residential neighborhood that should be a safe haven for family. Such an incident occurred In Barrington between middle highway and 114 when Stella the dog was hit while playing with the family. Residents are concerned because this is too often a repeat fear and not the first time a pet was hit by a hit and run.

Stella the dog is lucky to be on the mend after some time in an animal hospital. Her owner stated that “The hospital said she was basically dead.” She was hit by a speeding truck near her driveway when she wandered near the street. They document that over the years other pets have been killed—a couple cats and they lost a dog several years ago. With the multiple incidents involving pets and near-misses, residents are concerned that a child will be a next victim.

Those in the area are trying to with the Town Manager and Police Chief in order to get signs posted to slow down and speed limits lowered. You can help in this effort by signing and sharing this petition. Let’s make an attempt to save children, pets and others from possible traffic fatalities.

Town Manager, Peter DeAngelis – With the recent traffic accident in Barrington involving Stella the dog, it is really important that you do something to protect the many children and pets that play in the areas where they live. We are asking that you pass an ordinance to lower the speed limit in high traffic areas with children and ensure you place several traffic signs of warning that will get drivers to slow down. Ensure the new speeds are enforced through initial monitoring by law enforcement but do something that will protect the pets and children who deserve to play in a safe environment where they live.
