Environmentally-Friendly Transportation Under Attack! Stop Train Reregulatation

  • by: Go21

Traffic congestion is major problem, and it’s getting worse.

We need to take every step to reduce emissions contributing to global warming, and increasing the use of freight trains is a practical way to start.

Freight railroads are by far the most environmentally friendly mode of transportation.  In fact:

  • A train can move a ton of freight 423 miles on one gallon of fuel.
  • One train can carry 280 trucks between cities, freeing up the highway for cars and commuters.
  • Since train fatality rates are four times lower than other modes of transporting goods, moving more freight by rail will also save lives.

Freight trains are more than three times as fuel-efficient as trucks. They’re also three times cleaner. Unfortunately, bills are going through Congress right now (S. 953 and H.R. 2125) that would reregulate the railroads and put the brakes on rail expansion!

Tell Congress to oppose S. 953 and H.R. 2125. Let freight trains take a load off highways and cut greenhouse gas emissions!

A copy of the letter identical or very similar to the one below will be sent on your behalf to your representatives in Washington:

Dear [Decision maker],

As a voter concerned about global warming, I urge you to vote against S. 953/H.R. 2125, a proposed re-regulation of freight railroads.

This year America has seen a terrible drought. Last year we had floods. The year before, we had hurricanes. Global warming is a fact in our present, not some scare tactic about the distant future.

Trains move freight over the long haul more efficiently than trucks. Able to move a ton of freight 423 miles on a single gallon of fuel, trains also produce fewer emissions than trucks. It seems logical, then, for our nation to move even more freight by rail.

Since using trains to transport goods reduces harmful emissions and thus, contributes less to global warming, national policy should support expansion of rail's ability to haul more. H.R. 2125 would impede rail's ability to grow. I oppose this bill and I urge you to do so as well.

Sincerely,
