Support a Just Transition for Communities with the RECLAIM Act

Across much of the Midwest and Appalachia, communities have mined, transported, and processed coal for more than 100 years, performing some of the toughest jobs anyone can do. As we transition to a clean energy economy, it's vital that we make investments that give mining communities a voice in their own economic future as we clean up the environmental dangers still posed by coal.

The RECLAIM Act, which draws from President Obama’s popular Power Plus Plan to help coal communities as America shifts away from fossil fuels, is a common sense piece of legislation. It would put $1 billion toward restoring land damaged by destructive mining practices while also giving a boost to rural economies by creating jobs in areas like agriculture, recreational tourism, and alternative energy projects. It's sponsored by a diverse, bipartisan coalition in Congress, but we still need to build a broader, stronger coalition to ensure it passes.

We urge Congress to pass the RECLAIM act in the upcoming lame duck session. Help make sure Congress passes this legislation to support new jobs for coal communities as our country transitions to a clean energy economy. Our cleaner, healthier, more sustainable future is within reach!

Tell Congress to support coal-mining communities in building a healthier, more sustainable, and more just future by passing the RECLAIM Act today!
Subject:Support a just transition for coal communities with the RECLAIM Act

As your constituent, I support the RECLAIM Act and wish it to move forward. I urge you to support passage of the RECLAIM Act as part of any end of year legislation taken up in the lame duck session.

As American transitions away from coal and towards a clean energy economy, coal communities and working families are fighting to create new economic opportunities through the RECLAIM Act – which is a vital piece of bipartisan legislation that was put forward after dozens of coal towns and counties called on their representatives to support robust federal investments in coal regions to help diversify their economies.

Today, many coal communities and their families are in danger of being left behind unless the federal government invests in proactive economic diversification and development programs that (1) help transition workers to new careers, (2) ensure that they and their families receive the retirement and healthcare benefits they’ve earned, and (3) clean up dangerous coal mining sites that threaten local health.

RECLAIM is a strong step in that direction. The legislation will direct $1 billion from the Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) fund to assist coal communities – providing $200 million a year to participating coal states annually for five years and empowering them to work with local communities to identify and fund economic diversification and development projects that will boost employment, and clean up dangerous abandoned mining sites. The RECLAIM Act legislation provides a blueprint for future economic success in the coal regions by focusing on training, education, and the revitalization of communities historically dependent on coal. With support from elected officials, coal communities and working families can start getting the foothold they need to create the community driven economic growth that will ensure long term prosperity for coal regions.

Coal communities and their families have powered American homes and businesses for more than a century, and they deserve our respect and support as the coal industry continues to decline. Please show your support for coal communities and the RECLAIM Act.
