Protect the Innocent Victims of Asbestos Poisoning

Target: U.S. Senators
Sponsored by: People Over Profits
Under the guise of helping victims of asbestos poisoning, Washington politicians are pushing S. 852 and calling it the "Fairness in Asbestos Injury Resolution Act" (F.A.I.R.). The only ones getting fair treatment in this deal are the asbestos companies and insurers whose products poisoned and killed many people.

Asbestos manufacturers have known since the 1920's that their product injures and kills people exposed to it, yet they kept the deadly nature of their product a secret. Hundreds of thousands of workers and consumers have died or will die from diseases that result from asbestos exposure - people who desperately need help to pay medical expenses as they fight for their lives.

But the F.A.I.R. Act is nothing more than a massive corporate bailout! If passed, this act will save the top ten asbestos producing corporations $20 billion dollars by taking away the legal rights of asbestos victims, forcing them into an ineffective and under funded new trust fund run by the U.S. Department of Labor.

While asbestos manufactures make out like bandits under this misguided proposal, victims and taxpayers will be left to pay the real price of asbestos poisoning.

Time is running out, the F.A.I.R Act may come to a vote as early as February 6. Please urge your Senators to reject this legislation that re-victimizes those who are already suffering from the devastating financial and health consequences of asbestos poisoning, and requires taxpayers to foot the bill for negligent corporations looking for a free ride away from their responsibility.

A Victory- For Now!
The Senate blocked the Asbestos Bailout Bill, after only 58 Senators voted to wave the Congressional Budget Act, short of the 60 required. For now, victims of asbestos and their families have retained their right to hold asbestos companies accountable for their actions. But stay tuned, supporters of this measure have vowed to bring the bill up again in the future.

But for now you can click here for more petitions.
Dear Senators,

I urge you to oppose the so-called "Fairness in Asbestos Injury Resolution" Act. Stand up for victims of asbestos poisoning, not companies who put their bank books and balance sheets before workers' and consumers' lives.

For decades, asbestos companies kept it a secret that their product was slowly killing workers and their families, as well as the consumers of their products. It is unfair to restrict the rights of asbestos victims to hold these companies accountable for their wrongful actions.

If this bill becomes law, victims will have to wait years to be compensated for their injuries. They should not have to wait for trust fund administrators to decide IF and WHEN they will receive the money they need to fight the progression of their illness. Many will die waiting.

Also, people who have already been promised settlements or are awaiting their court dates would be forced to start over again in the trust fund – AFTER waiting as long as two years while the fund gets started. That’s not right.

The "FAIR" Act is not FAIR to asbestos victims who were deceived by large asbestos companies who valued profits over people. I urge you to oppose S. 852.

Sincerely,

[Your name]

This administraiton has blocked every attempt to protect our troops, give them and their families complete health care, even diminishing their health care. Amazing that this Administraiton also claims that they are the protectors of our military men and woman. Those of us, regardless of our polics must become a viable force to provide everything our troops need.

My father passed away May 2, 2003 from Asbestos after serving for 23 years in the Navy and served in WWII, Korea and the Vietnam wars. My mother is still living and it has been very hard for her and for our family after losing him. We miss him dearly. Asbestos was known about many many years ago and still nothing was done. My father was 76 years old and was still playing sports and was in great health for his age. All of us that have went through this really need to be heard and we need justice and compensation. My father was everything to me and I miss him so very much.

Peoples lives have been destroyed. You need to make those Companies pay their victims proper compensation. Anything less is to condone and support the Companies disgusting and unethical behaviour. If you have a product on the market that kills people and you know that it kills people, doesn't that make that person, a murderer? That Company a murderous Company? Will those murderers be arrested and made to stand trial for their crimes?

It finally came to me. By eliminating the working class, working poor, homeless, etc., the wealthy will have won by destroying the very core of humankind. Does anyone remember the Bolshevik revolution?

I have a family that I may not be here to support, love and be with. Asbestos poisoning is destroying my ability to live, it should not destroy those who remain because of the greed of those who are responsible for my exposure.

Right now there are thousands of loyal Americans fighting a war in the wrong country over oil and old grudges. They're often giving up their limbs, or their lives because they, like the millions of vets before them, are loyal to the country that they love and respect. Meanwhile, the lawmakers are doing everything in their power to erode that respect by sending troops to their ultimate deaths because they were not provided with the proper armor that could save their lives. Now Congress has the opportunity to repay those veterans who have given their services in other conflicts only to find they were infected by unseen asbestos that either has already caused many slow, torturous deaths, or is in the process of horribly killing our veterans right now. You have the power to help them by giving them the justice and compensation they deserve. Just once, do the right thing.

Major maufacturers get away with murder all for the love of money, what is wrong with this world. Big business makes billions at the expense of the people, Insurance makes millions off the sick people and then decide what kind of care people are alowed to have because they don't want to pay. Big business should be held accountable and show respect for the planet and the people and future generations that live on it.

Workers harmed by asbestos deserve to have fair compensation --especially for medical expenses. Determining fair compensation is a question for a jury to decide, not Congress. Rather than curtail just compensation, why not establish federal funding, particularly for veterans harmed on active duty?
