We Need Leadership, Not New Nuclear Weapons

The Bush administration is seeking funding for an initiative to develop new nuclear weapons and rebuild the weapons manufacturing infrastructure left over from the Cold War. This misguided plan will launch a new, costly, and unnecessary cycle of nuclear weapon design, development, and production.

At the same time, many prominent people, including former Republican Secretaries of State Henry Kissinger and George Shultz, are calling for the United States to take the lead in efforts toward a "World Free of Nuclear Weapons."

It's time for real leadership and dialogue on nuclear weapons, not to build new ones. Join these efforts today by urging your senators and representative to reject funding for the administration's misguided plans and to use their leadership, voice, and votes to help achieve the goal of zero nuclear weapons.

Dear Congressional Representative,

I urge you to reject the Bush administration's plan for a new nuclear weapon--the Reliable Replacement Warhead (RRW)--and a new weapons manufacturing capability--Complex 2030--and to instead call for U.S. leadership toward a world free of nuclear weapons.

[Your personal comments here]

Former Secretaries of State Henry Kissinger and George Shultz, former Secretary of Defense William Perry and former Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee Sam Nunn recently wrote in the Wall Street Journal that the United States and the world face a "new and dangerous nuclear era."

They recommend that the United States ratify the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, negotiate further reductions in nuclear weapons, and lead efforts for a global ban on fissile material.

We cannot wait any longer to reduce the grave risks posed by nuclear weapons. Please give floor speeches and ask questions in hearings to begin a dialogue about U.S. nuclear weapons policy. Please also cast your vote against funding for RRW and the administration's Complex 2030 proposal.

Sincerely,
