Lift Women Out of Poverty with the GROWTH Act

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: CARE
Women in poor communities are more likely to spend their income on food, education and health care for their children -- activities that help lift families out of poverty. However, they often face unequal barriers to participating actively in their countries' economies.

That's where U.S. aid programs can play a role. The GROWTH Act will help women lift themselves and their communities out of poverty by providing:

  • Loans to help women start and grow their own businesses.
  • Skills training for women.
  • Information about their legal rights in the workplace.
  • Stronger women's land and property rights so that assets can be used as collateral.

Tell your legislators to make economic opportunities for poor women around the world a priority! Countless women are eager for access to better employment opportunities and improved working conditions.

Dear [Decision Maker]:

I am writing to urge you to co-sponsor The Global Resources and Opportunities for Women to Thrive Act - H.R.2965 in the House and S.2069 in the Senate.

Women in poor communities are more likely to spend their income on food, education and health care for their children -- activities that help lift families out of poverty. However, they often face unequal barriers to participating actively in their countries' economies.

U.S. international assistance and trade programs should prioritize economic opportunities for poor women around the world, and allocate resources to promote women's ability to start and grow their own businesses.

Poor women are every where. Not just in third world countries, but right here in America. I work everyday with women here in Kentucky that cannot make ends meet. We need to start working in our own back yard! Take care of the people here and it will spread across the world. We are becoming a global society, and you as our HIRED congressional leaders can do something now.

Desperate poverty and no way to get out of it means more crime and other social problems. What effects women also affects their children.

It is a FACT that poor women spend money on benefitting their families; while men all-too-often spend money on expensive toys to gratify their egos, and means to enhance their standing. Very sad; but, unfortunately, usually TRUE. It makes GOOD SENSE to aid women in overcoming the legal and social barriers to their advancement that MEN in patriarchal societies have, unfortunately, erected against them. Women's gains mean family gains and community gains and gains in society as a whole.

We are living in an economic crisis this day and time. It take two or more working in a household to make ends me, trust me I know first hand. We have come a long way in allowing women the right to vote, drive, and work. I say if the woman can handle a job, ANY job that she chooses and can qualify for that job, let her do it! There are a lot of companies now that hire women: truckdrivers, carpenters, doctors; you name it, women have come a long way! They want to help their families: let them!

Women have faced unequal situations since the time of susan b anthony and the right for womens vote went into effect. Are we still so archaic in the USA that we dont want to give women a chance? Women serve in the US military and give their lives for us,most women are single mothers and get no child support at all.Help get them out of poverty stop opressing women and allowing opression here in the USA it is the 21 centrury we have came so far as a nation why are we behind in this?

Lifting up women has a measruable impact with direct results of lifting communities, cultures and nations from poverty. In many impoverished sectors, around half (and increasingly so) of all households are headed by women. Invest in women. Without a clear gender agenda in global thinking and investment, we will never make a difference in the deepening poverty around the planet.
