President of Bangladesh: Reverse The Child Marriage Restraint Act

  • by: Ann W
  • recipient: President Abdul Hamid

The government of Bangladesh just passed an act that puts the minimum age for marriage literally at ZERO. The Child Marriage Restraint Act 2017 was recently approved by the President and will create legal loopholes that will allow child marriages under certain circumstances.

While the legal age for marriage will remain 18 for women, 21 for men, the Act allows girls under the age of 18 to be married in "special cases" or for "the greater good of the adolescent", both without definition.

Children are at risk and this must be stopped!

According to the Independent: "There are fears the orders could be used to force victims of sexual abuse or pregnant rape victims to marry their abusers."

Although the government promises to assess each application experts such as "The Girls Not Brides" group said no examples of "special cases" had been given that would make child marriage acceptable, saying other measures such as protecting education and providing economic opportunities for girls would better serve their futures.

Please sign this petition asking the President of Bangladesh to REVERSE this life damaging Bill!

President Abdul Hamid,

We (the undersigned) are appalled to learn that any legal loopholes exist that will allow for the marriage of children of any age.

Human rights should be extended to every member of every society. A child should not be put into this life changing and tragic circumstances.

Little girls could be raped, and/or impregnated and forced to marry instead of their attacker going to jail.

Please reverse this loophole for the safety and well being of all of your people.

Sincerely,
[Your name]
