Start Early: Take a Stand on Pre-K

Target: 2008 Presidential Candidates
Sponsored by: Pre-K Now
Access to high-quality pre-k shouldn't be about where a child lives or luck or family income. The proven and lasting benefits of quality pre-k should be available to all who want it.

Pre-k can raise academic achievement and graduation rates, reduce grade repetition and special education needs, and teach invaluable social skills and teamwork.

The presidential candidates must show leadership on this issue now by making pre-k a campaign priority. Ask the candidates what they will do to help all children start school ready to succeed.

Dear Presidential Candidate,

As a voter in this year's primary and general elections, I'm writing to urge you to make federal support for state pre-kindergarten programs an important part of your platform and a top priority if you are elected.

In San Francisco, my daughter was instrumental in establishing a fine program of child care and pre-K education for the working poor. Transferred to New York City, to replicate her work, she has been bucking all kinds of blocs, from indifference to political corruption. If you saw what her efforts had effected in California, I think you would be moved enough to support similar programs here and throughout the country - and not only for the poor who can work. Concern for the care and education of children will certainly influence the way I vote. Judith N. Siegman

My nephew's mother cannot afford child care and has pulled her 5 year old out of child care. I am truly saddened by this because he is so eager to learn. His birthday is Sept 8 so he just missed the cutoff to start public school. He will be six in Sept and still not in any form of school. When he was in child care his flurished and loved learning. I feel so bad for him at this time, to be so smart and deprived of the tools needed to grow and learn. His mom is unable to provide much of anything for her two boys, so to pay anything for child care is out of the question.

Think of the children. All children need an education and it seems like it is getting harder for people to find an education. It needs to start somewhere. Please help so they too can get an education.

As an early childhood educator and owner of a preschool and child care center I am urging you to invest in this nations very young children - our future. Substantiated research has proven that quality care and education at a young age has lasting effects on children and their future success-especially those children living in poverty. Please help to raise the academic achievement rate for these children.

My Child Care Center and many like it in Wisconsin are doing it's best to provide highly educated teachers for our 4-K students. Unfortunately the pay does not reflect the importance of this job or any job in child care. This must change in order to insure the highest quality of care we can provide. Please help me keep high quality professionals by being able to pay them more. It has been proven, investment in early education pays in academic benefits in the long run. Thank You Joan Beck

Please support quality early childhood education and the programs that provide it. Access to high-qualtiy programs shouldn't be about luck or family income. All of America's children deserve a high-quality early childhood experience. Please make federal funding of quality programs a priority-for our children!

I am an early childhood professional. I really would like to see more funding to support early childhood as a whole, and not just head start. There are many studies that show the long term positive impact for children who attend high qaulity early learning settings. Studies have also shown the economic gains communities receive with investments in early childhood. Be a champion for early care and education and support quality childcare.

Only 1 in 5 children has access to state-funded, voluntary pre-k, and the quality of programs - which is critical to producing positive results - varies widely. Please make federal funding of quality pre-k a priority in your campaign and, if elected, in your administration. Please do what you can to keep early childhood education at the forefront of priorities. Child care and education have a huge economic impact, and we must insist that we have high quality programming for young children. Too many programs are mediocre to low quality, mainly because of lack of funding and poor wages for child care workers. I think it is imperative that we do something to provide financial assistance to child care centers, or incentives for businesses to step up and sponsor early childhood care and education programs. I am fortunate to work in a corporate sponsored center (sponsored by Promega Corporation), but I know most centers aren't as fortunate. Please do not forget about our littlest citizens, the young children birth to 5. Thank you.

A child's education must start from day one. Learning to speak and form sentences are just a few of the responsibilities that the parents must help their children to learn. Pre-K is the best way to get a child "on track" with their studies and gives them a head start for grade school. By taking away the opportunity for all students to partake in this, the government is taking away opportunities for students to be taught at an early age. This allows the student to be set in the certain classes and groups they need in order to learn to the best of their abilities and at their own pace.

Every child deserves the opportunity to advance their education as early as pre-k. Pre-K should be available at all public schools and should be offered to all parents who want to send their children to school early. At this early stage children will begin to develop reading skills, vocabulary, writing skills, and teamwork. The tax payers in this nation deserve higher education and demand it now.

Every child deserves an early start in education. Pre-K should be nationwide and all Pre-k's should be even in teaching quality. The earlier we teach children the more interested they become in school. Also every child should get equal treament in public education. Pre-K should be mandated by the national government because statistics show that Pre-K helps the child in the long run.

Bush and Vice President Dick Chaney Sponsored by: tan's alt movement: President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Chaney: On behalf of the following petitioners, PLEASE STOP the AERIAL GUNNING SLAUGHTER on "OUR" wolves in Alaska. Today would be a wonderful day to do exactly that. If you care, as you claim to, about all American Citizens; I ask you this question. "HOW CAN YOU ORDER AND ALLOW such an HORINDOUS and INEXCUSIBLE COLD-BLOODED ASSAULT on one of America's most beloved and revered creatures, THE WOLF?"..........So help me, I cannot see a dog lover allowing this travesty of justice. PLEASE ReCONSIDER your decision and orders to exterminate one of "GOD'S" most noble creatures. The wolf is an integral and absolutely a necessary part of the "real west", the natural eco-system. I had hoped you would value the life of at least a WOLF. If you would educate yourself just a "bit" about the part a WOLF plays in the natural order of things. HE is very very important. Help "SAVE" one of GOD'S most majestic and social creatures, the wolf, and you will not be remembered as the one who made absolutely sure the WOLF becomes extinct. The sad part is, the cowardly fashion by the shooter, in which the WOLF must face death! We, The American People HAVE MOST DEFINITELY seen it. Many videos and activists will never allow this one to go away. Thank you, sirs, for taking the time to consider this urgent issue; and please do the Right Thing this time.
