120,817 11:40 pm PDT, Oct 20 Mr. John Hadfield 71 Male Bicester   United Kingdom Bush & Blair should be tried for war-crimes at the Hague. The invasion of Iraq and the lies that were told to justify that invasion show what sort of people these are.

Between them these two are responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent people and the destabilisation of the Middle East. Why should they be rewarded for their crimes?

120,807 12:02 pm PST, Dec 2   Gordon Wilson 68 Male Laguna Niguel California United States The fact that a felon and murderer such as Bush can be awarded a "PEACE" prize explains why I regard such official awards in the same way I regard Micky mouse and Goofy. Excuse me while I vomit.
120,806 2:05 pm PST, Dec 1   Judith Burton 63 Female Salt Lake City Utah United States This is the most appalling action of this century so far. Yet another perpetration against the innocents of the world. Harald T. Nesvik should be relieved of his duties. Bush and Cheney should be brought before the international tribunal as co-conspiritors in the reckless endangerment of world citizens and the cover-up of ordering more than 10,000 murders of Americans and Iraqis. If Bush receives a prize, it should be for TERRORISM! Sitting on the throne of the most powerful position in the world makes him responsible and so, all those who attempt to idealize these actions. 120,797 2:04 pm PDT, Jul 15 Mr. Christopher Loughran 25 Male Redwood City California United States I am completely dumbfounded! The act of even briefly entertaining the delusion that Bush and Blair should be considered for the Nobel Peace Prize is an inconceivably gross insult and a disastrous contradiction to the entire concept of the Nobel Peace Prize. Furthermore, if, by some stroke of horrible fate, Bush and Blair won the prize, it would completely invalidate every single Nobel Peace Prize hitherto awarded! It would be a malicious act of incredible violence to the long-standing tradition celebrating illustrious individuals and their eminent contributions to the most esteemed values of the human race.

120,781 1:18 pm PDT, Jul 12   Pete Feldmann 63 Male Sierra Vista Arizona United States To award these two "war mongering power & money hungry dregs of humanity" for the Peace Prize would be no different then nominating Hilter and Stalin posthumously. He who destroys a thing to see what it is has left the path of wisdom, and these men destroy peace to reach it -- it's senseless! I do not admire these men, and do not support their nomination. There are many other, more worthy candidates. Open your eyes. These two are not.

Reject Nomination of Bush and Blair for Nobel Prize

Dear Nobel Prize committee

I am writing to protest the nomination of UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and US President George W. Bush for the Nobel Peace Prize, and to urge the committee not to award this prestigious recognition to them.

Norwegian Member of Parliament Harald Tom Nesvik announced that he has submitted a nomination for Tony Blair and George W. Bush for "their decisive action against terrorism, something I believe in the future will be the greatest threat to peace."

From what I understand, the provisions set by Alfred Nobel specify that the winner of the Peace Prize "shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."

However, Tony Blair has ordered more military actions than any U.K. leader since World War II, with at least one military action every year since 1998. George W. Bush has initiated a war not only against Afghanistan, but an undefined, open ended "War on Terrorism" which administration officials threaten to expand to other nations such as Iran, North Korea, and Iraq.

In pursuit of his "War on Terrorism," Bush has urged massive increases to the size and funding of the U.S. standing military. He has also embroiled the U.S. in civil wars throughout the developing world. U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney has stated that the global "War on Terrorism" launched by Bush "may never end. At least, not in our lifetimes."

Many global peace groups have been working hard and making change toward ending violence and global suffering, but have been stonewalled or even intimidated by the war administrations of Bush and Blair. The courageous, nonviolent direct work for peace by groups such as Women in Black (a 2001 Nobel Peace Prize nominee) and the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan, stands in direct contrast to the global warfare launched by Prime Minister Blair and President Bush.

Perpetual war is not peace. Whether or not Bush and Blair's actions are justified, their extensive and expanding pursuit of warfare is not the same thing as working for peace by any definition of the word, and does not amount to "fraternity between nations, ... the abolition or reduction of standing armies and ... holding and promotion of peace congresses."

I hope that the Nobel Peace Prize committee will reject Nesvik's proposal and choose to make an award that will respect the unique prestige of the Nobel Peace Prize, and the individuals and groups who have truly worked for global peace.
