NO SWEAT: Sweatshop Free University

  • by: Michael Byrne
  • recipient: Simon Fraser University, Board of Governors
The purpose of this petition is to demonstrate to SFU's Board of Governors that the campus and surrounding community would like to see SFU support the human rights of workers who produce the goods and services that the university purchases.
Whereas Simon Fraser is an open, inclusive University whose foundation is intellectual and academic freedom;

Whereas SFU currently has no structural guarantees to ensure that products sold by the University are manufactured under ethical and humane conditions;

Therefore we, the undersigned students, faculty and staff of SFU, hereby call on the University to adopt an ethical procurement policy that would require suppliers and licensees of products bearing the University's name or logo to treat their employees in an ethical and humane manner, and to disclose the locations of all manufacturing facilities. In addition, we request that coffee retailers on campus be required to offer fairly traded coffee. Members of the University community should have the option to spend their money in a way that does not exploit other human beings.
