Support Labels on Cloned Milk and Meat

Target: U.S. Senate
Sponsored by: Care2

With very little data to go on, the FDA has decided that milk and meat from cloned animals and their offspring are safe to eat. This means that within a few months, the livestock industry could be shipping these items to your supermarket with no labeling.

Cloned cows and pigs suffer from numerous health problems. Many are born with deformities and birth defects, and a majority don't live to adulthood. Those that survive often have weakened immune systems. These sickly animals are frequently treated with antibiotics, which may contribute to an increase in antibiotic resistant bacteria. Without labeling, you won't be able to choose whether or not to buy meat from clones.

Act now! Ask your Senator to co-sponsor the Cloned Food Labeling Act (s.414) introduced by Senator Barbara Mikulski.

Dear Senator [Last Name]:

I am writing to ask you to co-sponsor the Cloned Food Labeling Act (S.414) introduced by Senator Barbara Mikulski. This bill will require labeling of milk and meat from cloned animals and their offspring.

I care deeply about the quality of my food and the way it is produced, and I want to be able to choose for myself whether to buy products from cloned animals. A poll by the Pew Initiative on Food and Biotechnology in 2006 found that 64% of Americans nationwide are uncomfortable with animal cloning.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, many cloned animals are born with deformities and birth defects and do not survive to adulthood. Many suffer from illnesses and must be treated with antibiotics.

Labeling is a common sense approach that puts control over the food on my table back in my own hands. Please consider co-sponsoring S.414.

I want to know what I am eating and make informed decisions, therefore all foods need to be labeled.

If you don't want to put labels on your food becuase you think people won't buy it, it shouldn't be on the market in the first place. You need to recognize that while some Americans are just fine with eating science experiments, some of us want to know what it is we're eating and who's been messing with it. Respect your nation and label your foods. It's that simple.

There is a joke where a group of scientists got together and decided that they didn't need God anymore. One of them went to God and was offered a competition, to create the best man that they could. The scientist bent down and picked up a handful of dirt and God then said, "Make your own". By cloning, the dna, which we don't understand how it really works, is damaged in the duplication. Animals are defective and usually die painfully. Since we are not God we cannot create true life in the laboratory and, until we know that this damaged & man made life is not going to dmamge us or our children, it should not be in the food chain.

Please Respect our right to know what we are eating and drinking. Support Labels on cloned milk and meat so we can make the choice to buy or not! We work, pay taxes and have the right to decide what we want. Don't take that away!

I have a right to know what I am buying as a consumer. I do not believe there has been enough time to really know the effects of cloning. I do not think it is NATURAL and I do not want to support it's production or be subjected to it's by-products. Thanks.

How is it that we can have the freedom of choice when we are not permitted to know our options? By not requiring labels on cloned meat and dairy products our freedom to choose whether or not to consume them essentially withheld from us. I understand the concerns and substantial cost of requiring labels but it has already been done for organic foods, and it should be done for cloned meat and dairy products as well. This industry will continue to grow and now, at the onset of this process, is the time to act if not for our health then for our future.

As with GM crops there is a substantial difference and tremendous health risks in these foods for humans. Cloning, GM, and industrial farming as a whole is morally bankrupt. Let us take this a step further and abolish the FDA alltogether, as the agency unconstitutionally protects corporate interests at the expense of life and health.
